You. Yes you. That nerd over there. Get over here and answer these questions about a new computer thing for Boomertard over here:

1) 4x8Gb RAM or 2x16Gb? Want 32Gb because 16 is looking like just not enough anymore. FF is getting to 3 GB daily for fucks sakes'.
2) 3800x because that's about what games use now or 3900x because games might benefit from this in the future
@nerdman
Unless you're buying some server grade equipment that has quad-channel memory, just stick with 2x16gb. If you grab a motherboard with 4 slots it will also leave you options for upgrade in the future.
If you're not sure if you'll be willing to invest money again in the future, especially since it might involve changing both motherboard and CPU, it might be better to "future proof" and grab the better components. Or even if building a PC isn't fun for you, and you don't see yourself spending time doing this research again soon, also try to "future proof".
@alyx

I used to find it fun, but I haven't done it consistently in so long it scares me. I'm getting a friend who does that way more often and getting the components and we're getting together to eat pizza and build the damn thing.

Current one lasted me a good 5-6 years. Next one I expect will be about the same. Except I'll eventually replace the graphics card to some AMD model because I want to move to Linux.

@nerdman @alyx Switching to Linux is difficult but once you get the hang of it you won't be able to tolerate Winblows anymore.

@terryenglish @nerdman
I feel like I'm still able to tolerate Windows but I find Linux more flexible and fits me better.
@terryenglish @nerdman
That I do. Sometimes too much. But that's a story for another day.
@alyx @terryenglish

Windows is just weird. I FINALLY chased down something that was causing some processes to from using about 1Mb RAM to over 200, causing my shit to crash or me to reboot.

With Linux I N E V ER boot. Ever. Unless there's a blackout.
@terryenglish @alyx

The only reason I haven't done it yet is because games. This new computer I'm putting in a Linux.

I mean I've been using Linux since like 95, but the main desktop is always been windows, pretty much for games.

Is there a preferred distro for retards? I used Ubuntu a lot but I think that's fallen out of favor these days.

@nerdman @alyx Linux Mint is generally the one I recommend, especially for desktops. Though if it's for gaming you may want to try PopOS.

@nerdman @terryenglish
@igeljaeger uses Pop OS for games, and it's Ubuntu based, so it might be more comfortable for you. I currently use Manjaro, which is like Arch for n00bs and I'm the happiest I've ever been with Linux.
@alyx @nerdman @igeljaeger @terryenglish I'm just unhappy with the distributionscape overall at this point. The taint of corporate need and the non-technological ideological fights seem to have a lot of collateral damage for those of us who just want a fun andflexible operating system
@leyonhjelm @alyx @igeljaeger @terryenglish

The only person I've ever imagined having fun with just an OS is Terry and Temple OS.
@nerdman @leyonhjelm @alyx @terryenglish there people here who call tweaking their OS a hobby of theirs. Welcome to weirdoverse
@igeljaeger @nerdman @leyonhjelm @terryenglish
I've never called it a hobby, but I do enjoy messing around with software like that. Tweaking things, finding new programs to do the same stuff in different ways, or to do new stuff.
@igeljaeger @nerdman @alyx @terryenglish my hobby is not having any risk of having to talk to the cunts who provide community "support" for Debian ever again.
@igeljaeger @alyx @nerdman @terryenglish
I couldn't reliably do so in 2000 for the problems I was having. I've been anti-Debian since.
@nerdman @alyx @igeljaeger @terryenglish I remember the sentiment more than the verbiage, that's why I didn't use quotes. My response was to ask where to find TFM so I could R it.
@igeljaeger @leyonhjelm @nerdman @terryenglish
All I can do now is imagine a little toddler Igel when I first touched a computer.
@alyx @igeljaeger @leyonhjelm @terryenglish

Mine love the Paint program. My 5 year old can already write whatsapps. They learn fast.
@nerdman @igeljaeger @leyonhjelm @terryenglish
MS Paint definitely was the first thing I've messed around in too. But pretty fast came the classics: StarCraft, Heroes 3. Later on Age of Empires 2, Counter-Strike, Half-Life.... *sigh* the memories...
@alyx @nerdman @leyonhjelm @terryenglish my memories are filled with games that were actually appropriate for my age. Like mario and zelda.
@igeljaeger @leyonhjelm @nerdman @terryenglish
Look, I'm not judging the parenting skills of your folks, but Wolfenstein 3D was definitely a better game to play before I could read properly.
And Quake II and Blood II are clearly indispensable life lessons for a growing child. (I definitely learned the value of cheat codes from those 2)
And where would I be today without the driving lessons of Carmageddon, Midtown Madness 2 and GTA3?
@igeljaeger @alyx @leyonhjelm @terryenglish

Well to be fair I DID use to go to this screen where you chose what to put in the kernel, what to do as module, compile all that shit, and boot and you had your new kernel. I did that for about a year back in the 90s. And it was kind of fun.

But as you turn into an old person you just want the thing to work and show you the pretty lights or the hot pr0n.
@igeljaeger @alyx @leyonhjelm @terryenglish

Most people are born unfun, is how I'd put it but yeah old age isn't really conducent to having fun.

Speaking of fun, someone should tell that Torba guy about the Gnome code of conduct. Then we can have Gab OS. Or BoomOS, maybe. MAGAOS?
@nerdman @alyx @leyonhjelm @terryenglish I was a kid who always copied his homework from other kids. Doing the shit you did back then just sounds like dinosaur fun to me
@igeljaeger @alyx @leyonhjelm @terryenglish

I traded for my homework. Other kids did history / geography / boring stuff, I did them the math heavy stuff in exchange. This was before someone hit me with the retard stick.
