internet friend whos coming over for animagic is bringing weed "for himself" (I told him to not bring drugs).
He said he'd smoke it alone somewhere in the city, so it 'doesnt bother me and the others'.

I dont get these druggies. Why isnt a few beers in the evening enough to cool down before bed. Why do you HAVE to do this crap when youre just here for 3 days?

Rant over I guess.
@igeljaeger I get not wanting the weed around, but I wouldn't want the beer around either. maybe you could make a deal to give up the beer for the night if he gives up the weed.
@brad or maybe you just dont get beer in german culture. We dont drink it to get drunk necessarily.
@igeljaeger I will admit I don't know much about german culture and also that I am pretty anti-alcohol compared to the average person (it tastes absolutely disgusting to me).
@brad imagine european culture without alcohol for a second. Tell me what thatd look like. What festivals would be held. Almost none is the answer.
@igeljaeger Seriously? You can't imagine food stands, games, music, etc. without alcohol?
@brad the fuck youre talking about. Around 80% of all festivals in my area are wine festivals
@igeljaeger Okay, I don't know what you're talking about either (and I'm losing interest quickly). I'm not in europe and I don't picture something very specific when I hear "festival". It can be all sorts of stuff.
@igeljaeger gonna be honest with you fam, I have zero interest in reading about alcohol, and I find it unpleasant that you're saying that's a major part of culture over there

@brad @igeljaeger Were your parents alcoholics or something? Alcohol the reason I'm here and probably my two sisters. Let's hear it for alcohol! 🍻

@terryenglish @igeljaeger No, my parents don't drink at all. Might've influenced me to grow up thinking it's bad, but I've tasted it myself and it's disgusting, and not "worth it". I'd genuinely rather have a milkshake and pop some amphetamines or alprazolam or something. I don't get this crap where you sip on something that tastes gross and burns your throat for a pretty mediocre feeling and potentially feeling sick the next morning too. I've never been able to stand the stuff long enough to get proper drunk myself, but I had some rum, wine, and lager a few weeks ago and felt sick all day. I went on a bike ride and thought I was gonna vomit. I don't think I even felt any sort of buzz at that point, and I already felt I'd made some big sacrifices to drink that stuff.
@brad
My German beer doesn't "burn my throat". Lemme guess, you don't like black coffee either because its bitter? The drinking age in Germany is 16 for beer and wine for a historical and cultural reason. Actually in most euro countries it's that low. Just let this thread die now
@terryenglish
@igeljaeger @terryenglish I should probably specify that beer (having less alcohol in general) doesn't burn the same way rum and such will, but going back to what I said previously about hating sipping on something gross for a long time, I lean toward the higher alcohol content stuff so I can just get it over with. I can almost understand the logic behind taking shots, although they're quite uncomfortable compared to taking a small pill, which at worst will be bitter or salty but just for a second.
>you don't like black coffee either because its bitter?
Correct, yeah. I'm not huge on coffee or tea. I do sometimes wonder if my tastebuds are used to having a lot of sugar so that I don't react as well to bitter things. My parents also don't like coffee or tea. My older brother seems fine with both, but for all I know he had to train himself to like him, which I'm probably unwilling to do.
@brad @terryenglish I've been drinking coffee and beer since I was 15 and never drink "strong alcohol". Only wine and beer. Drinking vodka etc to "get it over with and get drunk" is pretty degenerate
@igeljaeger @terryenglish I've literally never been drunk in my life to be clear, it's more of a mindset (drinking the hard stuff to get it over with) than how I actually live my life. I will always turn down alcohol. I've made the effort to give alcohol a chance maybe 3-5 times, but in general I don't touch even a drop of the stuff.
@brad @terryenglish it's just very surreal to me that you just lump stuff like german beer and medicine tasting vodka under one term. Both have a very different audience
@igeljaeger @terryenglish I kinda get what you're saying... As far as considering alcohol's main purpose to be getting drunk, that's probably just a personal thing that stems from it all tasting bad to me. I get people probably taste beers or wines in the way you'd have an expensive dinner, but I can't get into it so I dismiss that part of it. I can relate more the the people who buy the scary-cheap vodka or whiskey to drink by themselves. I've seen friends drink stuff from all across the board when hanging out. Seems like sometimes they're trying to get drunk, and sometimes not so much.
I'm not trying to insult germany or whatever. I know you guys have oktoberfest which is probably almost entirely about beer. I'd just rather have good food or drinks that taste nice so it's hard to relate to this culture of drinking alcohol all the time.
@brad @terryenglish youre friends are retards who I'd never hang out with honestly. They sounds like the people I avoided meeting on the weekend in my time in highschool
@igeljaeger @terryenglish jesus... I just feel like I've misrepresented them now if they strike you that way. It's like they'll hang out on most Saturdays and sometimes they'll go pick up some alcohol before going over. Usually someone picks out something new they wanted to try and shares it with other ones. It's not like a wild party, everyone is sitting at a conference table and there's a big TV where they play youtube videos.
@brad @terryenglish people who meet to get drunk and nothing else are about as degenerate as druggies to me.
@igeljaeger @terryenglish Well, they meet up the same way whether anyone brings alcohol or not. It's often a bunch of them separately playing a game on a computer or console with some idle chatter, and the group goes out to eat at some point.
@brad @igeljaeger @terryenglish think of beer as if it were just another really tasty traditional food instead of alcohol.
That should make it easy to understand the german take on it.

@brad @igeljaeger Clearly you just have too good of a sense of taste. Once you're older and more of your tastebuds die your tastes will change. When I was younger I hated beer too.

@igeljaeger @brad Well you sir are hardcore. I had develop a taste for it while trying to cope with social situations like a normal person. 😉

@terryenglish @brad I had my first beers together with schnitzel and such. My mom bought it for me when I was 15
@brad @terryenglish btw oktoberfest is just the one foreigners know. Every village to city here has their own wine and beer festivities. Most have multiple a year. Most of the time with a live band and no, you cant just buy coke instead there. Even german christmas markets (which dont exist in the US I think), mostly revolve around glühwein/mulled wine.
@igeljaeger @brad @terryenglish No, they mostly revolve around Indian guys selling fake leather wallets and native accessories :^)
