So Gab has decided that their own code that they spent $5M of investor money developing is so unsalvageably bad that they're going to use Mastodon's code instead, with the added bonus of leeching off of our apps (with Gab apps being banned from app stores)

This is an early warning to fellow admins to be vigilant and domain-block them on sight, when/if they appear (unconfirmed whether they intend to federate), and to app devs to consider if blocking Gab's domains from their app is necessary.

@Gargron Yeah or maybe some established interest did all they could to clamp down on free speech so they turned to a decentralized platform designed to solve this exact problem among others. You write it yourself. Remember that free speech that is uncomfortable is what needs protection. To simply regurgitate CNN requires no protection but it's as well totally devoid of meaning. That being said if their ideas are as bad as you'd think it'd be easy to prove them wrong, right?

@TBF @Gargron Free speech is meaningless unless you protect the freedoms of marginalized groups from hate speech. If you care about freedom, you should care about the safety of the targets of bigots.

Freedom doesn't mean one person can do whatever they want, it means freedom to as much people as possible -- which might require some actions to be forbidden and fought against sometimes.

@romariorios @Gargron
Freedom of speech isn't if you restrict it.

I don't see what you are afraid of honestly. If you really believe in your opinions why are you so scared of debate with someone who doesn't share them?

It's exactly that form of reasoning that has put Assange in the spot he is right now, only then the excuse was national security and yours is protecting marginalized groups.

Like puppets giving away their freedom just because the boogeyman of the day.

@TBF @Gargron @romariorios I’m sorry but if one point is “we want to kill or otherwise limit minority groups” and the other is “let’s try and talk about socioeconomic policy”, then I don’t think the discussion has much of the same subjects going on and is two completely different talking points.

Socioeconomic policy is something we can agree and disagree on all day, and is something you can have your views on and I can have my views on.

Suggesting the merits of murdering or excluding minority groups is something that I don’t see a point in arguing with, it’s just something that you shouldn’t discuss in the first place because that is inhumane.

There is a reason people bring up Nazis when this kind of subject comes along. It’s because they are a historical example on what happens if you let those kinda groups run rampant.

Also if this sounds like I’m being excluding towards people who think you should murder minority groups, that indeed, yes I am. It’s called the paradox of tolerance. If you don’t know what that is, I’ve attached a simple info graph explaining what it is (also, the minority groups targeted by people like this are typically minority groups that they can’t choose to be a part of. Nazis and similar ideologies are something you can entirely choose to be or not to be.)

@noirscape @Gargron @romariorios
In fact I am from a minority, I would be very against trying to silence the voices critical of my ethnicity within that country however. Proving them wrong is trivial. It's better to let them participate and invalidate themselves by inompetence.

The problem with trying to silence people is that you get the opposite effect they'll get more traction when people do not dare to argue with them.

Instead you get people chasing frogs and looking like idiots

@Gargron @noirscape @romariorios
Does not work, it only proves the conspiracy for those who are "true" believers.

Is your faith in your own argumentative abilities so low that you can't even trust that you'd make a solid case against systematic murder?

In the meantime a lot of innocent people get accused of racism, by people who "understands the cosmetics". In the meantime 4chan laughs their asses off while you have witchhunts looking for cartoon frogs.

#bashthehash

@TBF @noirscape @romariorios If proving them wrong is trivial then there is no value in debate. Deplatforming provably works better to reduce the numbers of such movements as it depraves them of their most valuable asset: Exposure to new recruits.

@Gargron @noirscape @romariorios Proving that earth is round is trivial still you don't want to deplatform flat earthers, why is that?

Do you stop to consider that your postmodern analysis that detects people that want to murder people systematically might be off at time. Especially as you think you can detect this without them telling you this?

@TBF @noirscape @romariorios Joined May 2019, 26 posts (most are re-shares of other people's), website link that doesn't work, follows 5 people and is followed by 2 one of which is a bot, bio text that doesn't mean anything, claims to be a minority while defending the rights of white supremacists to discuss murdering minorities.

Hmm, I wonder what this could mean

@Gargron @noirscape @romariorios
Nice ad hominem and straw man you know very well that I defending free speech and nothing else.

Sorry https is broken on my site thanks for pointing that out.

@TBF @noirscape @romariorios This isn't a debate 🤷 The data shows deplatforming works. Facts don't care about your feelings.

Follow

@Gargron @TBF @noirscape @romariorios Alright let's see the data. For that matter you could elaborate as to what you mean by "works". Works in what way? Do you mean less people joining extremist movements?
