I helped out someone's grandma last night. She wanted me to install MS Teams so that she could join a meeting.
It took half an hour just to get it installed and to open up. I had to leave before I could connect her to the meeting. But she's running Windows 10 on an older laptop and the machine is underpowered for Windows 10.
I am very tempted to format the thing and install Linux.
What Is the Signal Encryption Protocol? | WIRED
Currently installing Debian 10.6 32bit on a Sony Vaio from 2007 or 2008. It has been going for an hour and I feel like take another 30 minutes.
Moral of the story:
1. Old tech ain't useless. It is just slow.
2. Buy SSD. Don't torture yourself.
3. Debian is your friend to fight tech garbage problem.
Lessons to be learned:
1. OS installer shouldn't go to sleep because IT ISN'T IDLE.
2. Install Debian on HDD to browse SSDs on old hardware.
3. Buy an SSD.
4. Switch to SSD.
I was inspired to expand this into a full article to give myself a bit more space to talk about the issues:
If you are or are not a #signal user, please consider taking the signal user survey. Signal does not collect analytics on their users to respect privacy and I appreciate them transparently asking for the feedback instead. More information on their blog entry: https://signal.org/blog/signal-research/
Link to survey: https://surveys.signalusers.org/s3/03fb88477ded
Also, if you haven't tried signal in the last year+ they have made significant user experience improvements (new features, ease of use, stability).
I am really loving this app. Whenever I used AppImages before, I had to extract it first to get the icon file (many don't integrate with the system by default) and then create a custom launcher. Now, it's just as simple as making it executable and running it. AppImageLauncher takes care of mostly everything else.
