In the past, I was very excited about the FSF Respects Your Freedom certification and bought a lot of hardware on the list. But to be honest, RYF does not recognize how modern hardware works.
For example, neither bunnie's novena or @mntmn's mnt reform laptops qualify, which is a bit silly given they are the most open laptops I have ever seen. I'm excited by the points Kyle raised in this talk and I hope it will lead to a new criteria to evaluate the openness of computing devices.
@pdp7@mntmn I guess the idea for blobless HW was that you don't depend on vendor publishing fw. I.e. if you bought a hw for which vendor site is long down you should still be able to run the HW. But it actually became some hardly comprehensible bureaucratic nonsense.
