Look what came in the mail? My @purism Librem 5, but I am still waiting on my SIM card For the Librem cell service for some testing between that and @Efani but this will be an interesting review of the battle of the privacy phone ecosystems I have made.

Doing my initial tinkering of the @purism Librem 5 phone and WOW. I am impressed it’s truly full #Linux I just installed @element using apt out the box. Their official instructions! Taking the phone apart as well and thoroughly impressed

Turns out I didn’t need @element as the @purism has #Matrix built into the native chat app. This is measurably getting better and better as a #security and #privacy phone. I’m still installing it for better chat room capability but THIS IS AWESOME.

This is so awesome to use full #Linux instead of Android or iOS on the @purism Librem 5. I don’t think it will ever be a primary phone but it’s a good secondary phone I can recommend. Especially if I can load it up with some security tools for my job. I’ll have to try the @PINE64 Pine phone as well at some point. But this blew me away with how well it works

@purism YO! I did a long command and my screen fell asleep and it gave me a notification my nmap command finished running this is SICK! Really loving this Purism Librem 5. Neither #android nor #ios just pure #linux #opensource

I think the @purism Librem 5 should have the memory boosted from 3GB of RAM to at least 4GB of RAM and storage boosted from 32GB of eMMC to 128GB of eMMC. The #Librem5 also needs autocorrect on the keyboard badly, it’s pretty hard to reliably use to text compared to my #iPhone and pixel. I will be testing Waydroid soon for #Android app support soon for Signal, Discord, and some streaming apps possibly. Plus testing media from SD card soon #linux #cellphone #infosec #cybersecurity

@chiefgyk3d @purism I don't see how the price tag can be justified when looking at the specs.

Sure, it is a lot of money and we understand how one might come to this conclusion when **only** looking at the hardware specs.

@alphasixtyfive @chiefgyk3d

However you might want to consider some additional factors:

Our software developers write software and very much like to feed themselves and their families ;)

And while we fortunely build on top of a lot of great projects like @gnome @debian (and lots of others)
**A LOT** of work still had to be done and all of that is being done in the open. Our developers try hard to do the right thing™ and upstream everything.

2/N

@alphasixtyfive @chiefgyk3d @gnome @debian

We're talking basically from bootloader, kernel drivers all the way up in userspace, be that wayland protocol bits for input, libhandy/libadwaita, work on invidivual applications and packaging in and work in

If you take all of that into account the equation changes quite a bit!

Also: It's hard to actually get manufacturers to talk to you (and not ignore your emails) when you're a small fish in the sea!

3/3

@purism @chiefgyk3d @gnome @debian I'm sorry if my comment sounded a bit harsh, this was never the intent. I totally understand where the cost is coming from, I was simply saying that it is very hard to justify buying it right now (although I would really want it).
