@purism that really looks like a rebranded k9 mail 🤔

@jr We proudly base the Librem One software on Free and Open Source Software (such at K-9) -- and contribute back to the projects (and the community) along the way.

More information on how we work with upstream projects and give back here:

@purism but I don't understand why I should use your apps instead of the original ones

@jr
@purism
Really? Don't you get it? Certainly, Purism isn't targeting you with these services but a much larger audience. People like these app suites, they like a seamless experience and design. Rebranding is actually a smart move because they can offer a user experience that is close enough to the ones for Apple and Google... and this means an easier transition to their products.

@dyamon the design isn't really seamless if you look at the screenshots... and I also don't understand why they are targetting Android and iOS now and not the Purism phone... @purism

@jr
It makes moving easier. Same strategy worked when Free Software on Windows (browser, email, chat, office suite, etc) allowed people to shift to Linux and keep using the programs they were used to.
@dyamon @purism

@keverets so they want to implement the Android API into the OS? That will end in that no developer would make native Apps... @dyamon @purism

@jr
Yeah in this case I assume they will slowly transition to a more purism-ish interface, whatever this means. Also you want to hit Android and Apple because the transition goes like:
1) I have an Android phone
2) I try Purism One and like it
3) Time to change phone. I heard about Librem5... does it have all the apps I'm used to? Yes, it even comes with my fav social network, Librem Social!
4) I buy a Librem 5
@purism

@purism Does the encryption work even if the recipient's mail provider doesn't support encryption ?

@mathieu @purism It's funny, because when Elementary forked Geary they kept the same icon (it was IIRC designed by Dan, after all). Then when @jimmac updated it we finally had a distinct identity again, and now Geary's back to sharing it's brand again.

@tbernard did a purple version of the new icon, maybe that could be used to differentiate between the two?

@mjog
I don't think it's that big of a deal that Librem Mail uses the icon of Geary, e.g. I remember elementary using the former GNOME Games icon for quite some years on their app center thingy, it's fine.
@mathieu @purism @jimmac @tbernard

@KekunPlazas @mathieu @purism @jimmac @tbernard I'm somewhat ambivalent about it considering the old situation with Elementary's Mail, I just think it's likely to confuse people and hence not the best idea from that perspective. A$10 says I start getting bug reports about it in gitlab. ;)

@mjog @mathieu @purism @jimmac The reason why the Librem One apps use the same icons as their equivalent GNOME apps is that they're supposed to be an easy entry point to the GNOME ecosystem, similar to how e.g. Google ships the same Android-style icons for their apps on all platforms.

Of course in practice we're still pretty far from having consistent clients for all platforms, but the idea is to work towards that.

@mjog @mathieu @purism @jimmac That said, we can of course discuss how to address potential issues with that approach short-term. Mastodon is probably not the best Medium that though :)

@tbernard but then in Google's case they are applying their own branding to their own apps.

@purism is applying @mjog 's branding to an app made by a 3rd party.

That's not really the same situation. 😕

@jimmac

@mathieu @purism @mjog @jimmac It is in the sense that I (as a Purism employee) worked on this Geary icon, and Purism is investing in Geary upstream more generally.

Ownership semantics are not as clear-cut in free software as in the proprietary world, but that's nothing new :)
