25-word summary of the architecture of upcoming, rewritten Obnam backup software:

client splits live data into chunks, then compresses and encrypts them, and uploads new ones to smart server via HTTP; server never sees cleartext

(not finished, may change)

@liw I'm sorry if you've covered this somewhere (your blog has a lot of old obnam articles dated 2020), but what sets obnam apart from borg and restic? what's the reason for it existing instead of improving something else that's close?

Follow

@liw Indeed. A perfectly valid reason. But just to clarify, there's no comparison yet?

@ptman As before, I'm unlikely to make a comparison between Obnam and other backup software. I would doubt my ability to make it fair. That's for someone else to do.

Also, Obnam is a long way away from being able to be used for real.
