“I like iOS, it's much more simple!”
My screen broke and Apple now expects way too much for repair, is there anything we can do?
I need this app which Apple doesn't allow on the App Store, can we still install it somehow?
My pictures are all taken in an incompatible format, how do we convert them so I can view them on my PC?
After the update, everything is so much slower and the battery drains quicker, can I revert this?
I don't have a problem with people wanting to use more user friendly software, I do have a problem with that “user friendly” software deliberately causing issues as the corporation behind it wishes to increase their market share.
If one side is not user friendly because it's not developed well, but the other is not user friendly because it deliberately tries to be worse in order to discentivize certain consumer decisions, then you don't have any good options.
As much as it's personally frustrating that these people constantly encounter problems caused by their preferred devices, and refuse to recognize them as such, the issue is not the individual consumer that is just “too stupid to buy the right device” but rather the corporation not being regulated to act differently.
With sideloading now being possible on iOS in the EU, and USB-C having become the default for even Apple devices, we can see that such change is only possible through democratic institutions which truly represent the will of the people, not corporations that wish for your experience to be as terrible as possible if you dare buy a product that isn't in their ecosystem.
I agree with the message, although there’s also tech-savvy who find it to be the least worst option.
Phones are social devices, and iCloud is a very compelling option when you have to share files and photos with your family.
I consider Advanced Data Protection to be one of the only options of “E2EE done right” because they factor in the threat of losing your own key or device.

But yes, Apple’s lock-in is BS and needs to be regulated.
If you want to read the perspective of someone who upgraded from an iPhone 11 Pro to a 15 Pro, who regrets it, but who doesn’t have a better option for now
@thibaultamartin @ErikUden As someone who has used both Apple and Android for extended periods of time ... I wonder if a Pixel might be of interest to you? UX-wise I'd argue that it's better than iOS these days (esp. notifications, cameras & browsers), and for sharing pictures etc. using Google Drive, Immich, icloud.com or Nextcloud is actually quite nice these days (coming from a iOS/Android household as well)
I have a strong aversion to Google. Apple is not a great company, surveillance wise, but I think Google is even worse.
My family and step family are both locked into the Apple Ecosystem. As much as I hate to admit it, relying on iCloud to share pictures or backup data is one of the least worst options for less savvy members of the family.
As for Nextcloud, the rationale for not using it with my family is pretty much https://ergaster.org/posts/2023/08/09-i-dont-want-to-host-services-but-i-do/
@pojntfx @thibaultamartin @ErikUden I didn’t realize Hetzner offered such a service. I hadn’t seen it mentioned on the Nextcloud website for example. Those prices are super reasonable… if I were setting up Nextcloud today I would very likely go with that option.
@mpanhans @pojntfx @thibaultamartin @ErikUden Hetzner is not an official certified Nextcloud partner. They are simply using a community edition. That's why you won't find them on the Nextcloud's website.
