A challenge proposed by @jjardon for #GUADEC2024 in Denver: we try to go the whole week using only GNOME for our phones. No iPhone, no Android, just GNOME OS or postmarketOS or whatever with GNOME on top.

Navigate with Maps, wake up with Clocks, share our adventures with Snapshot and Tuba, communicate with Fractal, etc.

Think that sounds impossible today? We have one year to get things into shape before then! 😅

@cassidy @jjardon that would be so awesome!
Said that, I was trying to figure out which phones have even descent chance for hardware support and I could not crack it.

@peteriskrisjanis @jjardon yeah, that's an issue right now. My OnePlus 6T is so close to perfect, but… no camera support 😭

@cassidy @peteriskrisjanis @jjardon Does the OP6 support calling or sms in North America? I thought because NA telecom industry has moved to the calls over LTE, calls/sms on that phone worked in some parts of the world but not in the US.

@mpanhans @peteriskrisjanis @jjardon ah idk about the international models, but they sold a US model on T-Mobile in the US. One of these days I need to stick my SIM card in there and try it out…

@mpanhans @peteriskrisjanis @jjardon but my understanding is that VoLTE is an option, but not required. Plenty of places outside of major metropolitan areas still have HSPA+ or whatever.

@cassidy @peteriskrisjanis @jjardon My understanding was that in the US, VoLTE is now required because the previous 3G cell networks have mostly been retired. I could be wrong though, and if you do try out your SIM card in there I would be fascinated to know either way whether it works for cell service.

@mpanhans @cassidy @jjardon considering how hard it is getting mobile hardware stack to run, I would extend that test to tablets, which might have be better success? :)
For now, I am planning to get QEMU/Boxes setup for this.

@peteriskrisjanis @mpanhans @jjardon I guess the idea would be for those who already have a GNOME phone, to try using it as your only phone. But yeah, more testing on more devices is not a bad idea.

@mpanhans @peteriskrisjanis @jjardon I mean, I frequently see HSPA+ when outside the city or in certain lower signal areas, and calls work fine on my Android phone. 🤷 I think there is even still an option to turn off VoLTE. I don’t think we’re as far ahead as you would think. 😜 Maybe there is a requirement for all *new* phones sold to *support* VoLTE?
