@me How do you like Intel Arc graphics on Linux? And have you tried DaVinci Resolve on Arc in Linux?
@schroedingershund Thanks again! I've daily driven PopOS quite a bit actually. I actually own a System76 Thelio Mira. I'm excited for their Cosmic desktop too.
The only reason why I've even considered switching from Kubuntu is do to Resolve having a hard time installing on 24.04. I've had no issues since probably 18.04! But, I think I've gotten it worked out so we're probably good to stay on Kubuntu. MakeResolveDeb is a fantastic project BTW and is so helpful!
@liblast I had to do something very similar for a cell phone app commercial several years ago. Did in Blender. There's something oddly satisfying about doing this sort of effect!
@schroedingershund Good thoughts! Thank you Thomas! I never put something into production without testing first on a single noncritical machine. So I tried Rocky 9.4.... It was an awful experience. Constantly crashed a couple minutes after booting until I switched to X11. Drivers just didn't want to work for my NVIDIA card. It was just bad unfortunately. Ubuntu based distros just tend to have the smoothest experience to me so I'm back on Kubuntu and we'll just keep using MakeResolveDeb. Thanks!
@BenjaminNelan @fastmail For sure! Can't speak on which is better since I've never used Fastmail, but at least there are some truly great alternatives to G-Suite and MS365 these days that are just as good or better to use for real work!
@BenjaminNelan Haha! I get it. We have 120TB in raid 5 on a Synology NAS for our main storage and in 3 years we have about 60TB used up😅 We shoot all 6K Q5 though so it's not too bad on file sizes
@thelinuxcast ProtonMail. For work and personal. I love it. I also have a LibremOne email but it's really been a not great experience so I've been working my way off of it.
@techhut @nextcloud So exciting!! My company's whole organization system is Nextcloud. I love how functional it truly is and the fact you don't have to sacrifice any functionality to use it
@BenjaminNelan What really matters though is that that camera looks incredible!
@BenjaminNelan @fastmail How do you like Fastmail? We're on Proton at my company.
@omenos Good thoughts! I appreciate the input. Can't really justify $2K just yet, but going RHEL down the road is our most likely future. I'll check out Alma though! Thanks again! That or Rocky is probably the direction we'll start moving to.
@EposVox Darktable is great!
Mac virtualisation software Parallels has just released a major update with a ton of Linux VM improvements, including support for Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 40 + more

@benny Blackmagic Design officially supports Rocky Linux. And yes, Resolve was originally designed to run on custom built and sold Linux systems way back in the day. It came to Windows and Mac later
"Ford Motor Company is seeking a patent for technology that would allow it to tailor in-car advertising by listening to conversations among vehicle occupants, as well as by analyzing a car’s historical location and other data, according to a patent application published late last month."

@omenos 3 editing desktops and an editing laptop. Then probably 2 general purpose laptops. No servers just yet. We have another company hosting our Nextcloud and we pay for email.
@benny Good point! Running on it's native distro may show some overall improvements
The social media landscape is pretty frustrating from a user perspective. Cohost is the latest to fall. I’ve seen in my timeline scrolling by: “good news is that can’t happen here!”
But it has. Over and over again. We’ve seen instances come and go. Sure, that isn’t the whole fediverse, and people can move to or create an account on another instance. But to the person on an instance shutting down or already gone dark, it’s pretty deflating and some never come back.
I like it here. I encourage everyone to not take it for granted.
