Hello, Fediverse! We’re the Endless OS Foundation, a non-profit bridging the digital divide with technology designed to make computing and learning accessible, fun, and safe for all.

We make the Linux-based Endless OS as well as the open source Endless Key app.

You may know us from the GNOME community, from running into us at education-focused events, or just from being around the Linux community for years. :)

if I were interviewing (I’m not), I might be tempted to casually ask about elon musk and use the reply as a litmus test to glean some insight into how much toxicity a company tolerates behind closed doors

just an idea

@ArtBear@mastodonapp.uk @cfiesler actually this is a very good thread that outlines some of the positive ways in which QT is used by different marginalized (here specifically Black) groups. Looks like I should have scrolled down further in my thread to see this!

@shengokai thanks for teaching me the name of this behavior. It's something I've seen but didn't know how to describe.

I'm converting my mastodon critiques into a word document that I will likely use to post mastodon local versions of those large threads about mastodon that I've made on twitter.

Having said that, I'm not really "anti-mastodon," as much as I am trying to point out that the fediverse does not have the tools to support the ways that marginalized groups built community on the bird site.

And it really comes down to affordances of the platforms.

So far one of the best things about everybody here is that I can actually scroll a bit mindlessly now but also hit a point where I've seen it all. No more bottomless pit of engagement to monetize me. I can just actually get back to work 😆

@srevilo @gcluley haha I thought the exact same thing. No one hook CAPTCHA up to IMDB and we should be good!

@cfiesler @ArtBear@mastodonapp.uk "extremely rare" seems too harsh. I would venture to say QT are overwhelmingly used in a negative manner but they DO have positive use cases.

If they could be redesigned to limit the negative uses I wouldn't hate seeing them here. 🤷‍♂️

@killyourfm oooo I like that phrase "virtual living room". Feels like a nice way to describe how we should want our socials to be 😀

@mekkaokereke on my instance there are no local and federated timeliness so home is all there is. I see no problem with using Mastodon this way 🤷‍♂️

@DanNess I mean there's no "eggs" here just faceless elephants which is the equivalent. I only posted when I noticed a few like that following me. Which is totally different than just someone who hasn't gotten around to filling out an account yet.

@MALPI yes that was exactly what I had said about . If we aren't managing it feels wrong to call us a platform team. It's a large product so there's a bunch of teams all doing their own thing. We're like the "meta" product team.

There are no SREs embedded with us but organizationally were with the SREs not the other product teams (I think). So we get a lot of crossover work with them just to keep things confusing 😁

@Witchwithcats @MattTheQuick just curiosity on my part. See the first post before the poll for a bit more context on the question.

I’m looking to follow more #blacktwitter #blackmastodon #blackvoices peeps here. I’m wanting to fully migrate from the bird app and I’m looking forward to curating a good feed over here.

Criteria:
- must be a native app
- must be good
- must be able to pay for it

I see we've reached the "name with numbers and no picture" era of Mastodon already. That was fast.

Now I can see how we got here from a UX perspective: the founding principle of the internet (decentralization) was/is a nice idea, but in practice, we couldn't expect the general public to code and maintain their own websites. CLI, HTML, and CSS were confusing and evolving, and we couldn’t expect normal people to follow along.

It’s #TransgenderAwarenessWeek, so here’s your reminder that much of the open source software you love was made with the help of transgender people—including elementary OS! Shoutouts to all the trans folks in our community 🏳️‍⚧️

@purism are there any plans to upgrade this server now that Mastodon v4 is out? I'm trying to decide if I should stay here or move to a different server
