@randomwalker it always seemed like there's more emphasis on exploring the tool than what the tool can be used for in traditional CS.
I think #CalmTech projects that place the primary emphasis on the individual are one way to address this disparity. Then again I'm someone who comes from a humanities background, not a CS one so take my generalizations about CS with a healthy dose of skepticism.
Looking for an Instance that is a good home for a Black queer feminist scientist who cusses and talks politics. Iโm seeing a lot of places with what I would consider to be excessive content warning requirements ๐ตโ๐ซ And other instances where I simply donโt know what the admin considers to be racism. Like, are we allowed to talk about whiteness?
@heath@mastodon.cloud @mikegalsworthy I'm not sure of the underlying mechanics of fetching updates but I have noticed that opening up a profile in the browser gives a much more up-to-date view of a profile.
@mosu @JayJustice one of the most satisfying feedback loops of gameplay I have ever experienced
@evangreer @mmasnick every time I think they've hit rock bottom they keep on plumbing new depths. It's almost impressive in a trainwreck sort of way.
@JayJustice I mean if you're gonna play #MassEffect I feel like you HAVE to play with biotics! That's one of the defining characteristics of the series. I definitely LOVED playing Vanguard, especially in ME3. (Got the collectors edition of that one ๐ )
@fantinel I'm guessing you mean Aral's post from the other day about costs? That was basically the one that has me pumping the brakes on self hosting my instance.
I expect that monetary reasons are going to start being a limiting factor here for size very shortly.
The real test of how likely Mastodon can replace a centralized service like Twitter will be when v4 of Mastodon is officially released (currently, it is in a release candidate stage which is after beta but not quite ready for the official release). One of the major tradeoffs with federation is always fragmentation. How well do servers keep up to date? Will this make a difference to users?
I definitely don't have answers but I think that this will be the first truly big test of the #fediverse
The recent introduction of the Securing Open Source Software Act, and its subsequent momentum, has stoked a debate about the true reason for the open source security problem and the merits of different solutions.

@rauschma sorry missed that part of your statement.
That is my understanding but I've never used DSD. It was too new of a feature to be used at my last job where everything was Web Components. I think that for them to really hit a sweet spot for developers it's probably needed.
I believe that enhance.dev is iterating around this specifically with the way they render on the server but I'm not sure exactly how they do it.
@rauschma that's a fair assessment of #WebComponets. I would be remiss in pointing out that you don't _have_ to use declarative Shadow DOM. It's very possible to ship Web Components today without polyfills if you chose to be a bit more selective with the standards you use.
@JayJustice I'll always boost #MassEffect
Hi I'm Jay! I'm a writer, editor & developer who works in comics, games & books. I love #scifi, #fantasy & especially #StarTrek, #StarWars, #WheelofTime, #TheWitcher and way too many more to tag. BIG #BioWare fan, so expect to see loads of #MassEffect and #DragonAge here. I'm also a cosplayer with 120+ costumes. I stream video games, comics discussions, #TTRPG, art & cooking. I LOVE talking #comics, #cosplay & #games, so feel free to hit me up! Boosts appreciated โค๏ธ
My apologies there's not an easy way for me to port these to Mastodon, but this thread contains every PhD recruitment tweet in the general areas of HCI/InfoSci/social computing/responsible tech I could find! https://twitter.com/cfiesler/status/1582126246007214080
@fishfulpenguin yeah I'm sort of in a holding phase at this point. I've been on my server for a few years now and the way it is setup I can't see anything but from ppl I follow. This meant that before last month it was always SUPER quiet. So I've been debating self hosting or moving. But watching everyone learn about being an #admin is very off putting. Just making a fallback account seems like the smart middle ground comparatively.
@fishfulpenguin seems pretty natural to me. I've been thinking about a second account but mostly to try out a different server. I would expect lots of churn in accounts for the next few months at least.
