@benpocalypse one of the things I find so strange about the GTK stack is that there doesn't seem to be a separation for the UI layer. It's all just one thing! There's a reason why websites have abandoned XML for their view layers.

@cassidyjames yeah I think if I'm going to end up purchasing something for a new personal device (the reason for the search) I might just go right back to another Thinkpad. Just torn if I want cheap or something developer grade

@cassidyjames looking at all the offerings most vendors seem to just not be focusing on this feature and want to compete elsewhere (ports and extensibility). Still if almost no one is doing it then some company is missing an opportunity!

@cassidyjames I really love the 14" form factor of my Lenovo Thinkpad but was looking to see if there's anything like it specifically built for Linux. I was looking at Slim, Star, and Laptops w/Linux since they all fund elementary but could find anything specific. I found a 3K one from Slim (I think it was them) but the DPI didn't seem quite right

Are there any Linux laptop vendors that sell anything with a 4k screen???

@Suzie97@mastodon.social @avojak these look great! Love the background too

One of the best parts about Cale Makars goal last night is how it's breaking peoples brains about the offsides rule. Love it or hate that's the rule and he knew exactly what he was doing according to the interviews.

@tbernard @cassidyjames gotta love the cross pollination of ideas in an open ecosystem

@cassidyjames @androidpolice the Withing smart watches integrate nicely with Google Fit is that matters to people. My only gripe is that they're pretty locked down so Im not sure how long they will "exist" for as a hosted service.

@cassidyjames @androidpolice I have used one of those Withings hybrid watches for the last 4 years or so. There's a whole lineup of them now that you can pick from depending on the features you want. They are definitely stylish watches with a fitness tracker as opposed to a wrist computer in a watch form factor. Would highly recommend a Withings or a Skaagen hybrid for most people.

Hi fediverse! Boosts appreciated on this one.

I’m part of a co-op building a platform for artists to sell art without getting exploited. I’ve been working on it for a while but there’s a lot of work to do and I could use some help. A ton of the main features are in place, but there’s still some big gaps and a lot of polish left before it can launch.

The platform is fully open source and developed in the open. It’s built on Phoenix/Elixir and Tailwindcss. Our co-op is already incorporated and established and it’s open to members that want to actually commit but you don’t need to be a member to contribute or help.

Does this sound interesting? I’d love some help! I’m also happy to answer questions. And no, you don’t need to know Elixir already. It’s pretty easy to learn for the things you’d be using it for. Even some design help would be welcome. Feel free to reply here or DM me!

So are there any open source hybrid smart watches that anyone knows about? My expectations aren't high but figured this is the better place to ask. I do love my Withings watch but am wondering if there's other alternatives to using some of the features rather than connecting it to Google Fit

@zkat for what it's worth, hearing from ppl like you who have been at this longer and still feel that same way is definitely reassuring to those of us with less experience.

Ok Fediverse, one thing I absolutely love about the Birdsite is watching historians and other academics share their work in public to improve our understanding. I think I'm just gonna start cross posting some things I find interesting as I come across them. Maybe we can make a new hashtag? For now I'm gonna just reuse one from Birdsite that Dr. Karin Wulf created.

@emanuele @aral @e88 would DMs still be open to the sysadmin of the recipient?

@aral @e88 basically the idea of a single user instance is trading moderation control for local (instance) interactivity and just planning to federate where you want?

I can understand the appeal in that

@e88 @aral what's the benefit of gearing an instance for a single person? A social activity feed for one seems counter intuitive unless I'm missing something.
