I’m new to @Mastodon, trying it out, seeing who to follow. Recommendations appreciated. Interested in #Digital and passionate about #WomenInDigital #WomenInTech
@nathandyer we bought 5 bags of candy (but not the BIG ones) for everything only to find out later that they're imposing a no peanuts rule this year at our daycare. So now we have two different buckets after finding out half of what we bought can't be taken. More for the few kids that live on our road I guess 😂🤷♂️
Very heartening to see the mass of #academics coming here from in the great #twittermigration. FWIW there are a few academics based instances here in the Fediverse, I'll try to link to them. The one I can think of off the top of my head is https://hci.social/about
Amplifying for reach.
Can someone help answer these accessibility questions for new Mastodon users?
This is pretty important, and will affect if I can keep recommending Mastodon as a platform.
@bkeegan IMHO H2 will be the one to watch. It seems that the communities "adjacent" to FOSS seem to be the ones I've noticed moving so far (#accessibility, #UXDesign, and #webdev mostly). But anecdoctally there's also starting to be more academics slowly migrating. Personally I think this is a good thing but only time will tell how it works out.
Even if you run your own instance, like I do, you have no #privacy on the #fediverse.
Only I get to read the direct messages received at my instance but I have no control over who sees the direct messages I send to other instances.
So, again, until end-to-end encryption is mandated by the core protocol (ActivityPub), remember:
Treat all posts on #mastodon / the fediverse as public and use an end-to-end encrypted messaging app like Signal if you want to have private conversations with people.

@mmasnick great look back at what was probably the most important part of Twitter's maturation (creating specific policies in place of one-off decision-making) and why Twitter as a free speech company mattered.
Found this toot again now after changing jobs. Very disappointed to say I'm at a React shop instead of working with #webcomponents but no job is perfect 🤷♂️
That said I am very much in the job position of making developer work go faster 🔥
@alexpghayes IIRC Fediverse doesn't do "quote"-ing b/c it tends to lead to dunking and doesn't actually foster discussion as much. This is the closes that you get (linking to the "quote")
FWIW I'm on Librem's branded social services because I want to know that I'm paying someone to host my account (and I wasn't on Patreon when I set this account up). It's definitely a smaller server so I don't see many issues here. That said if anyone knows of a Philly/PA based local instance that is being run I would be interested and might migrate there (willing to chip in $ too!)
Hugops for @Gargron and the team with all the new users signing up!
Little advice from an open source maintainer.
If you as a user or community member want your voice to be heard, try to format your message in a polite, direct, and short way. Even if the topic is very large, try to engage in a fluid conversation by discussing fewer points. Writing massively long messages might cause the opposite effect, where the maintainer feels overwhelmed, your most important points get buried, and the conversation ends up dying due the too broad topics.
Less is more.
@zkat I think we in the OSS community need to do a better job at finding and funding those companies that occupy this middle space.
