I setup an old thinkcentre with ubuntu server and its connected over 2.4GHz WiFi, and before you ask, no I cannot connect it over ethernet because: No signal for the GPRS Module I have connected to it.

I assure you, nothing of value was lost — I had this MediaTek adapter in my old HP laptop, I had to rely on dkms to use a newer patched module not in the mainline kernel for it to work — and even with that it remained very flaky. I've replaced it with Intel one — 7260 I think. It came with Intel Bluetooth adapter, which also works way better than MediaTek one ever did, supports wireless AC and 5 GHz networks.

I can't imagine it being the case with desktop, but if it's a PCI-e mini-card — replace it with something properly supported by the kernel, if not — get a compatible USB dongle. That MediaTek chip in Linux is to be avoided at all costs! 😅
