Saw a laptop on top of the ewaste dumpster, gutted except for the mobo and I guess display. Shame, I could have used another IDE harddrive.

@ozzelot
I have plenty, but they are all 20 or 40 gigabytes, as they were snatched from old ThinkPads 😅
My olde PowerPC MacMini has 320 gigabyte laptop size (2,5", is it?) hard drive which I bought when the 80 gigabyte one it came with died — if this one goes south, I doubt I'd be able to replace it ever — not sure they still make them, I've seen IDE SSDs being sold, but they are disproportionately expensive, would probably make more sense to use a converter.

@m0xee 2.5" IDE 320GB? Mythical. Biggest I'd seen is 160 in an original Apple TV.

Yeah, I got it in the late 2000s when they were still more or less current. Nowadays they are nearly impossible to find — even the used ones.

@m0xee Augh, I was a moneyless child barely getting into computers back then. If only I could even behold one of those drives.

@ozzelot
I wasn't exactly rich myself — fresh out of uni, I think this was my first "real" job, outside of uni and myriad of odd sidejobs before that 🤔
But as they were already being phased out in favour of SATA drives I could foresee that they would become more rare and probably more expensive.
I have to admit that this hard drive turned out very resilient — my Mini wasn't always resting on top of the cabinet like it does today and has seen the world well outside my place — it lives on!

@ozzelot
This is WD Scorpio Blue by the way, WD3200BEVE-00A0HT0 to be precise — lasted over a decade in a machine that's on nearly 24/7, even transmission-daemon reports 2103 days of uptime and I'm pretty sure I had to reset that counter at some point.
Can definitely recommend!
