9front doesn't want to connect to the broadband connection downstairs even with the exact correct password, whoops
It looks like wpa is hanging whenever it tries to actually join the network, why?

You can configure your access point to use either CCMP or TKIP: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802
Nowadays on the client you don't have to set up either of them specifically, you only need SSID and the key, wpa_supplicant figures out the rest itself — but it might not always be the case and sometimes you have to try using each of them manually.

@m0xee uhhh this is plan 9, the wpa supplicant talk doesn't exactly apply here. Instead I am using wpa(8)

@m0xee I think the firmware I copied over from the 9front repo with an example version of /lib/firmware is busted anyway, I keep getting messages about missing firmware even though it's right there when I go to look at it

see see @sysrq do you have experience with setting up wifi on 9front using an old thinkpad
@m0xee @sysrq oh, so I might've been using some fallback driver. FORK!! let me rebuild the kernel in 10 seconds
@m0xee @sysrq big sad, rebuilding the kernel did nothing. It just made the error message that said it couldn't find the driver disappear, still not able to connect to broadband router tho

@nyanide
Ha-ha-ha-ha, yes, this is what I mean! Did it work for you?
@sysrq

@m0xee @sysrq I'm about to check, my guess is the router did not like me using tkip
@m0xee @sysrq OH COME ON EVEN AFTER PUTTING -2 IT STILL DIDNT JOIN
@nyanide @sysrq @m0xee i rember i had this issue with an intel wifi card. i can't remember if it just worked once the firmware was in /lib/firmware or if i had to do a bind for it to be loaded to then use wpa
@pernia @sysrq @m0xee I rebuilt the kernel with appropriate iwn firmware, bound appropriate namespace to /net and specified I wanted to use wpa2 in wpa but it's still not freaking working, I really can't tell if this is a bug or not
@pernia @m0xee @sysrq should I post about this in 9fans or cat v IRC??
@nyanide @sysrq @m0xee i'd try irc, they're nice. might end up being something stupid xd
@nyanide @sysrq @m0xee i know exactly where u are bro :cry:

i think it just worked randomly for me after i tried it the 70th time.

i remember trying something like specifying the device on the aux/wpa, then doing the -2 thing, but yea p much just retard's luck

@nyanide
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about! Nowadays wpa_supplicant can figure it out, though it used to require manual configuration in the past, so maybe "wpa(8)" does too 😁
