Oh, long before it! In a way it was the US who have handed Russia over to Pooteen too — in the late 2000s and early 2010s when people in Russia were protesting and protesting still made sense, certain Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was doing her infamous "peregruzka" routine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_reset
I'm not shifting the blame away from Russians — we've certainly failed big time, but world's leaders have contributed too 😩

I often wonder why Europeans have been willing to prop up Putin for so long. It seems clear that they are much more to blame for allowing Moscow's empire to stand and expand than is the USA.
