Quake Champions is not a fighting game, but AFAIR it's exactly like that: only 3 or so characters are freely available and those aren't just skins, they have different stats and different special powers.
There was no backlash about it because everyone wanted to own the game to support it anyway — and I can't imagine a serious player using a free account for anything other than seeing if the game runs on the hardware well 🤷
@m0xee@social.librem.one I mean that in a balance sense, every character being as good as if you paid $5.99 for it
