I've just thought of an interesting definition of democracy:
It's the flip side of policing. Policing protects you from the people. Democracy protects you from the government.

Democracy itself does not protect people from malicious government, the dismantlement of democracy and transformation of it into an autocratic regime offer happens through democratic means and with majority's support: people LOVE the easy answers — just give the strongman more power and he will fix it all.

Scare the crowd enough and they will surrender democracy and hand you the keys to the kingdom, that's why attacks on democracy are often disguised as something scary, War on Terror or something like it.
