Mozilla Is Interested In A Rust JPEG-XL Decoder For Firefox & Google Might Develop It: phoronix.com/news/Mozilla-Inte

God fucking damn it! Can we have images without Google involvement already? 🤬

@romin
Well, Firefox is in Rust for the most part, so having image codec also in Rust kinda makes sense! 🤷
And unlike Go, Rust has turned into a tool that actually works not only on a subset of Google approved platforms, which are macOS with Apple Silicagel, Windows x64 and Linux x86_64 and AArch64.

@m0xee Most of Firefox isn't in Rust but big parts are, like the CSS engine (Stylo). I have no issue with more Rust components, as long as they're at parity or better than the thing(s) it replaces.

@thatbrickster
Yes, good point! I can't tell for certain which percentage for it is in Rust — haven't built it in quite a while as I stopped updating it 😂
But it always seemed to me that more and more components get re-implemented in Rust with time — this is the general direction it's heading, so having JPEG XL in Rust would be natural even from the perspective of reducing maintenance "costs" — that was my point.
@romin

@m0xee Google killed JXL in Chromium last year. The only way I see this is to avoid more antitrust lawsuits.

@thatbrickster
The option to disable WebP support being removed from Firefox right after critical vulnerability in libwepb was discovered was even more suspicious IMO 😅
