How dare you — SMS is a zoomer thing! I want fax interface for Fedi: you dial in, tone-dial the thread id and in a couple of minutes it calls you back and faxes you the printout of the thread — now we're playing! Read grown-up stuff! 👨‍💼

@m0xee @Aeder i can probably attach a modem to the stereophonica server and dial in. The problem is, I've no idea how to use a modern smartphone for Dial-Up. They no longer support DUN or RFCOMM profiles via bluetooth.

How does tethering over Bluetooth work then? 🤔 I've never used it TBH.
Dedicated cellular modems still do provide virtual serial port though — but I won't put my money on it, the ones I have are rather old too.

Do they? Those I saw provide a virtual ethernet adapter.

This has existed since the early days of Bluetooth, but I've never seen it used in reality. Well, with absence of serial interface, looks like its time has come. Why even bother with Bluetooth then and not just use wireless ethernet, is it easier on the battery?

No, I mean the Personal Area Network profile in Bluetooth. It also emulated Ethernet.

You mean WiFi? Yes, this is the most popular way to access internets through a mobile phone today.

Yeah, I remember PAN back from the days when my ThinkPad T43 was still brand new — I've never seen it used in real world, yes — why bother when there is Wifi? 🤔
It might make more sense now that Bluetooth LE exists — to save the battery, but I've never tried that myself.

@m0xee @Aeder BLE has much lower speeds. Honestly, I've no idea why bluetooth tethering still exists, I only know it is supported.

Damn, you're right, these Bluetooth services aren't even exposed on modern Android phones, I wonder if it's being supported by the Bluetooth subsystem? How am I supposed to send out hundreds of Spam messages over the SMS if I do not have access to the modem? 😖

How did we even get here? Why bother with all that instead of just using wireless?!
I was always finding those guys annoying, the ones who complain that e.g. new phones do not support Java applications or newer operating systems not supporting older APIs… Except now I'm that guy! 😒

@m0xee @Aeder usb has faster speeds, isn't prone to ether congestion (try running wifi in a busy airport), and can charge your phone at the same time.

The main reason is probably that Windows networking stack is a fuck. For one, Windows doesn't natively support things like vlans. I'm willing to bet that adding USB-IP support would also be total balls.
