every time I post an image without alt text, I feel a bit bad tbh. I also did not post stuff in the past because I did not want to provide alt text.
@kaia sometimes i went the extra mile and typed out the alt text only for my client to have a stroke and delete it :yotsuba_why:
@kim yeah or you type it all out taking 5 minutes and get zero interactions :ChenShrug:

A few of my posts started getting interactions months after. I think that spending five minutes on alternative text isn't worth it in any case, make it a few sentences which would help the person decide whether they should see the picture or not. I don't know why some people make alt texts about visually impaired — I don't think that any amount of text would make you enjoy the picture if you can't see it yourself. And it's not like they want to read the description of every picture.

I think they are same as us — want to just have a short summary of what is there. Even people with perfect vision enjoy reading summaries before delving into long reads, right?
So "a cat looking smug laying on the desk" is fine — but if the post itself had some funny story about said cat, they might always ask you the details, e.g. what colour are the cats eyes and so on.
When it's a screenshot, I provide whats' in it as text too — it doesn't take long.

It's a bit harder with meme pictures because you have to explain the joke, but in some cases it's also pointless as no amount of text would make it funny, so a short summary would be okay even in this case 🤷
