Daniil Orain asks the relevant question, if rural Russians are so poor, why do they still support Putin? The answers are quite revealing.

@randahl to me it does not seem to reveal anything new. Many Russians are struggling with an inferiority complex while they feel they need to show off superiority towards outsiders. Such traits are observable among various Russians in various sorts and forms for many years already.

I hope somebody can figure out a way to make them collectively come clean at a national-wide scale one day. It would solve a lot.

Whats more surprising is that it's still true for wealthier Russians — a lot of people can't afford a new car or even a newer phone anymore, even basic food got noticeably more expensive, but if you ask them if their life changed for the worse, they'll start proving with vigour that it didn't — as if admitting this is something personal.
Russians care a lot about what would people think. I grew up with all this and at times even I don't get it TBH 😩
