@randahl The only areas of Russia that resemble modern western states are the largest cities.

People’s paygrade and standard of living drops radically every 100km you get away from Moscow or St. Petersburg. Already at 300km out, it’s dirt poor & dirt roads.

These wages a soldier gets fighting in Ukraine then, are astronomical for these rural russians, even if those same wages seem quite low from our point of view.

You can still find wooden barracks in towns near Dmitrov, just 40 kilometers outside Moscow, not normal country homes, these are like blocks of flats — people still live in these. 100 kilometers away is where real wasteland is.
On the other hand, not a lot of people live in these towns — most move to the big cities, that is why the population of Moscow alone is greater than that of some smaller European countries. Russia is very disproportionate in this regard.
