@Helgi He was very controversial. He was also trying to appeal to "conservative" crowd a lot (lots of weird shit about it in Russia, but even so) despite there being a lot of hints he was into boys. He was full of surprises, people seem to love it. His party was named Liberal Democratic Party and he admitted it himself it just sounded cool, but had zero to do with liberal democracy 🤪

@Helgi TBH I don't even think Shura was gay, he just had an unconventional appearance and didn't object being perceived as one. At the time people were more curious and less aggressive towards minorities so that might have even been an advantage. Even Danilko dressed as Verka Serduchka was a favourite among those whom we call vatniks today. It's impressive how things change in such short time.And truly sad😔

@Helgi Exactly! Right now the one who shows most vocal support for legislations against gays is Vyacheslav Volodin who has a well-established reputation of being gay himself. That's an example of sick KGB humour.
I think there were a lot of Jews in the original NKVD, Stalin wasn't against them doing sick shit, but stripped them of their positions without second thinking as he got friendly with you know whom.

Jews were declared second class under Russian empire, called 'scum of the society' and they couldn't take any official posts. As the result they'd join the ranks of organized crime or revolutionists. While Christians of Slavic origins would rather side with less radical gang, like Leftwing Socialist Revolutionaire (including count Alex Tolstoy who was a Barin)
