@efi I don't think I'm aligning with them, I'm just not aligning with those who make these jokes. And I'm not doing that because it's cruel or something. I've been thinking about it recently and I think I know why it feels wrong to me. True, they did stupid shit that most can't afford, but we're still trying to make fun of those who are already dead. And it's not like they did something bad and it backfired β that would be funny, but here basically they just did stupid shit and died. And we don't know a thing about them except that they were wealthy, we aren't even sure they were destroying the planet or something like that. Some kid could've climbed a tree and fallen off it β is it funny? Might be, might be not β but it definitely doesn't feel like doing the right thing, like divine retribution or something.
Same with cancelling people or companies. No one's putting enough effort into cancelling Google despite them doing the worst imaginable things, yet some (I'm not speaking about you in particular, but there are people like that) put effort into some US politician who was stupid enough to paint his face black in college. Of course if he did that today that would be unacceptable and he would deserve all the hate, but he did it like 40 years ago and not out of hate, he was just a dumbfuck. And they've put enough effort into it so even I know about this and I'm not even a US citizen and not too well versed in anti-racist activism. What a waste β it feels pointless. At least they didn't "cancel" Hitchcock for that scene in which people throw eggs at black guy at some fair. Of course he didn't do that to promote racism β I doubt it was even perceived in the 30ies the same way it does now.
Then again, who am I to tell people what to do and who to hate, but it still doesn't feel right. I have nothing against bashing Elon Musk because he's still alive and is still doing stupid shit. These guys did stupid shit too, but they are already dead.
Bashing Bill Gates after death would feel right too because we know what he did and if people won't do it, someone would likely start speaking of his legacy sooner or later β he's a scum down to the bone, that's his real legacy. But these guys? We don't know shit about them, it all feels like beating someone who's not able to respond. If you're into that Ββ enjoy, I'm not the one to stop you. But doing that with a sense of purpose? That's poor taste to me.

@m0xee@librem.one @efi @m0xEE@breloma.m0xee.net @eniko Well if I was you, I wouldn't "dive too deep" into the conspiracy theories, you might even find an "iceberg" at one point
