@dave looked at the pricing charts for SSD the other day and they're 2x more expensive than HDDs for the same size. HDD have had a consistent floor price for the past 2 years while SSDs continue to trend down.

@crunklord420 It’s worth noting that prices are depressed due to an oversupply issue (COVID demand surge has run its course, new CPU/GPU offerings aren’t really a great value proposition, etc.), so it could rebound in a couple quarters, but you’re right that $/byte is getting really close.

Price floor on spinning rust is around $15/TB, this is only $40/TB, and you get massive performance uplift, massive (%) reduction in power requirements, massive density uplift, etc. At what point do you just go SSD-only?

@dave @crunklord420 That's what I did on my last build in 2020. Why not have a fast storage drive too for just a few more bucks?

@caekislove @crunklord420 For this especially, most people will do just fine with 2TB. I’ve been fine on 1TB and the only real limitation is having to clear out old games after I stop playing them.

@dave @caekislove @crunklord420 the thinkpad i want has 2 nvme ssd slutss iirc. it'd be amazing to have both filled with 2tb of storage but idk what I'd store

an increasingly growing collection of "archival" data of things you think will get pulled from the internet. It happens all the time.

@crunklord420 @MischievousTomato @caekislove For that I’d just go external. No need to lug your entire archive around with you.

Exactly! Why carry all the shit around with you when you can always scp that from your networked storage at home 🤷
Transfer rates grew together with storage capacities so it's no long a problem, even on mobile.
I have a terabyte SSD in my laptop, but it's like 60% free and I think I never deleted anything except backups from it.
