Honestly, every boy/man should learn self-defence and how to fight with weapons as part of their education growing up. So that they are able to defend their homes, families and themselves. They should be forming large families and communities and defending each other when one is attacked. To not shy from this.
@sim They aren't taught this because the governments of the world want them to rely on the government, so they can't defend themselves.
@inference That's also true. We have outsourced a lot of things now, made them specialisations and we have become dependent on the state instead. In the past, the men of a town would share the responsibility of patrolling the town at night in the UK. Some would pay someone else, but if they couldn't then they would be put on the beat. Until that became a specialisation and we just paid men to do it.

@sim Yep, it's not some evil government plot, it's just the way society works at this point. The more specialized and good at certain something you become, the more reliant on others to do other things you get. Without this we'd never be able to manufacture a lot of very complex things we use everyday now. Would it be better if scientists were chasing thugs down the street? I think not, but certain level of autonomy might be important for psychological well-being.

@sim BTW this is what Industrial Society and Its Future is about. It's not completely unfounded, but I don't think that many of us would benefit from moving to a cabin in the woods and hunting wild boars 😅
Taking a step back in order to find proper balance might be a good idea though.
