It's actually pretty scary that most people take for granted that most stuff on the interwebs is free and think of ad revenue as a default.
Take Telegram for example, people use it to send video, music, etc. It has to cost huge sums to operate, yet the ads are nowhere to be found, so where does that money come from? Yeah, sure, your messages are safe and secure! Encryption, you know.
At least they have premium accounts now so it's a bit more believable.

It's an ok app, but shit isn't en-to-end encrypted by default.
