My confusion regarding alt-right folx: our society IS a hierarchy, and the people at the top are for the majority white cishet men, how is giving this same group MORE power going to improve the poor white person's situation? They are arguing in favor of a system and hierarchy that is currently causing them pain and suffering. Is this masochism? Or are they overidentifying with their oppressors bc of shallow physical characteristics?

@urusan Although I find the conservative position less justified in this regard: what's there to "conserve" if you are poor and have to work hard only to have semblance of a normal life. What about inheritance tax — will they even have anything for their children to inherit?🤷
It's usually the same story with the Left, who are convinced that Right are about their right to be racist, and Right think that being Left is about something like trans-rights only.

@urusan It's the trick used to make people fight each other instead of working together toward common good.
Like reducing economic inequality. Most of the problems have pure economic reasons and that is why it's more important to listen to economists rather than politicians. Black people won't have criminal past if black neighbourhoods won't be predominantly poor, if they have access to good healthcare and education.

@urusan This is what will rid the society of racism, not some hypocritical ass kissing for minorities. High taxes are bad, but it's not that bad if money is spent on healthcare and education, not bailing investment bankers out. Occupy movement was about that and it was popular, so, to tone it down, they've made people fight about things that are important for people from different camps and worldviews, but aren't the main priority.

@m0xee while I think you are correct about identity politics being used to divide people who have common economic interests, I think it's also important to think about Why someone might favor the alt-right position. I'm not curious about "who's correct the right or left?". I'm curious as to why some people resonate so strongly with the alt-right movement. Do you feel more drawn to the "right" side of the arguments? Why or why not?

@urusan Ooh! That's an easy one — natural xenophobia. Treating outsiders with suspicion was important for survival at a certain point so it's sitting there buried deep even in the most intelligent ones. Throw in a couple of slogans about minorities being supported with your taxes, your hard-earned wages. Also they take your children's place thanks to racial quotas and your kids won't get anything because of inheritance tax — funds will be spent on minorities, remember?

@urusan It's not the way I see it, it's the train of thought of an average low-income white male the way I see it. I'm left of the center myself and I'm not even a US citizen, I live in a country with even more flawed society. Yes, that one😩
So it's just how I see it from a distance. It may look superficial because it is. Let us not forget that this person is most probably poorly educated and has to work all day, he's tired and has little time to look into the details.

@m0xee I disagree with the "poor, uneducated" argument. It removes the agency of any individual that is in the alt-right, and allows anyone not in the alt-right to emotionally distance themselves, and not examine the darker elements within themselves.

@urusan Being poor and being xenophobic often go hand in hand. It's a primitive survival mechanism that kicks in when you don't feel safe and being poor in most cases makes you feel unsafe/insecure. Of course there are exceptions, but that is what I meant when I was calling xenophobia natural.
I can elaborate on xenophobia in my country, how people are brought up with "defeating fascism", but are extremely xenophobic in daily life if you're OK with my multipart posts.

@urusan Original skinheads, whom alt-right appropriate elements of culture from, "trads" (Spirit of 69 and all that) weren't racist. They were working class British lads friendly with Black Jamaicans as they were working in the same docks. They've appreciated the same Reggae and Ska music, but it all changed.

@urusan The only way to overcome xenophobia is to increase standards of living by reducing inequality. Making education and healthcare accessible and affordable also helps. Of course the wealthy are against that and often exploit the xenophobia of the poor.

@m0xee i appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation where you are, it is interesting- I have a feeling that the US situation is a bit different- here is an article that talks about what I'm trying to articulate:

@urusan What do you mean Trump buried his wife on golf field for tax evasion? He's a hard-working man and deserves being able to do that, I'd tax-evade myself if I could.
Also these lefties just protest all day to support quotas instead of working like us, living off welfare (also our $$$) — they are enemies too!
And they want to take away our guns and let women have abortions so we get replaced with migrants. Mix all of that and shake really well — there, you have it😅
