@maxc I guess I was sort of expecting an IRC/matrix thing, but only found a discord and a twitter, which is not going to work for us on our connection.

When you have access to high speed connection and bandwidth is not a problem, check out gomuks. It's a nice TUI client in go, if you need IM only it gets the job done perfectly.
I'm not sure about bandwidth, but its battery impact is minimal on my 9 year old laptop. I have to resort to Element sometimes, but if I want to just receive notifications and be able to respond quickly, I run gomuks and it's almost like it's not there.
