@Jessica Reactionary stuff like abortion bans (oversimplified, but let's call it that) happens when society loses control of the state. Surveillance facilitates that and free software helps fight surveillance to some extent. So it's all connected. In a way.
But yes, fanaticism rarely helps the cause. Any fanaticism and any cause really.

I don't know, maybe there is some backstory to this, but thread looks like the perfect example of what you say is wrong.
Maybe those who preach free software are annoying, but original post sounds reasonable.
