@iska @furgar @dushman I'm talking about actual games, not gacha microtransaction trash.

@allison @iska@mstdn.starnix.network @furgar @dushman Xbox might not be the best platform for such trash. I don't know if it still holds true as my Xbox is just sitting in the corner collecting dust, but it used to require Xbox Live Gold subscription to play anything online. So there is no crowd who like to get something for free, but can be lured into paying for something later. Not the right environment for all this microtransaction bullshit.

@m0xee @iska @furgar @dushman Xbox isn't the best environment for anything really. All the microtransaction whales are on mobile, all the AA and indie enthusiasts are on Switch and PC, Japanese game enthusiasts on Switch and PS4. Sad thing too is that Microsoft actually dominated the 7th gen with the 360 and had all their goodwill *instantly* squandered by the One announcement (with very good reason imo), and they haven't managed to recover since.

@allison I don't think it was that bad on launch, Halo 5 was pretty good as was the Halo "remaster" and Halo Wars 2 later. You could still play Doom and Witcher on it. But yes, MS is consistent in killing off things that could work. The idea that you could run apps with the same code base on a phone, on your laptop and on Xbox was very appealing. But then… First they've pulled the plug on W10M, then Xbox becomes a little stale and they do nothing about it. And SUDDENLY no one needs UWP anymore 😆

@m0xee @allison @iska @furgar
imagine paying *full* price for a game and then have to also pay indefinitely just to get multiplayer.

@dushman Paying for software is bad in general. I've payed for two MS Office licenses and I've only used Office a couple of times. Had I chosen subscription-based model, I could just cancel it. And save.

@m0xee
Why pay for office or Windows when HWID and KMS have been around for a while? Not even a crack really, it's the same as a legit license technically.

@dushman From purely economical perspective, they've got expenses for server maintenance, traffic, etc. If they don't charge you every month, they'll put it in a price of every game.
Some just don't need multiplayer. Like me actually. I've always got Live Gold at a discount. And you received two free games with it each month: one for Xbox 360 and one for Xbox One.
So it wasn't THAT bad.
I mean I was angry when Blizzard had this idea to charge you for SC2 monthly, but with Xbox it kinda works.

@m0xee
>From purely economical perspective, they've got expenses for server maintenance, traffic, etc.

PC games can manage this while charging less for the game itself more often than not so this excuse is basically null
@m0xee
CSGO, an online only game basically, costs like 13$ and is one of the biggest money makers for Valve at the same time.

@dushman CS was an extremely popular game when CS:GO came out. This was no experiment. But if you make on online stealth RPG about lizard wizards, there kinda IS a chance people won't like it 😅
So the risks go into the price. That is purely economic shit.

@dushman Yeah, and if your expensive to produce game doesn't become wildly popular,the ones who payed full price for it decide to try multiplayer in a couple of years, they realize they can't because the servers are already down 😂
Besides, I don't think PC games are THAT cheaper. Indie stuff sure is, but games like Witcher and Cyberpunk have nearly the same price on all the platforms.
Still, most console games could be cheaper, I agree.

@m0xee
I mean anything that isn't a AAA title is usually cheaper on PC

@dushman It is! That is how market works. And that is why the companies in this business really like console market — less risks, higher profits, etc.
I mean I wish everything was cheaper, but if you look at how things work there is no evil conspiracy there. Well, in most cases 😏
MS ripped me off once when I preordered Halo Wars 2. The Most Complete Edition™ — so they claimed. But in less than half a year they've released a payed for DLC — never preordered anything from MS ever again.

@dushman BTW preorders are always bad. Nearly every company out there does stuff like this.
I mean you do get a rare ratdog companion, a shiny wooden sword and a cool hat that… you know, looks cool. But then in a week or two they start selling the game with a 50% discount 🤦🏿

@m0xee
It's because the console makers charge large fees on game sales
