I notice a lot of people asking what happened in 2010.

So I've decided to share a meme from 2010 to give you an idea. It should paint a picture about what gamers thought about the state of gaming at the time.

@Volpit@fosstodon.org It means expansion packs were generally more of the same game and didn't add a lot of new and interesting things I think.

@Volpit@fosstodon.org Like compared to the 90s where expansion packs actually completely overhauled the game. Like RTS games adding completely new factions, etc.

@Volpit@fosstodon.org A good example I just came up with is Command and Conquer for example.

C&C Red Alert 2 (2000) had the Yuri's Revenge expansion which added a completely new faction to the game.

C&C Generals had the Zero Hour (2005) expansion pack which only added some new units for existing factions.

@SuperDicq @Volpit A good counterexample is original C&C's only expansion pack — Covert Operations. It had zero new content, only "new missions". I mean really this stuff could be a bunch of fan-made save games in a zip-file, but they've put it on a CD and it was released as expansion pack: cnc.fandom.com/wiki/Command_%2
