Horror has always been a political genre. So, for October, we've compiled a list of 13 horror films and some suggested reading to go with them. Here's part 1 of 2. What would you add to the list?

Just overheard a delivery driver telling a grocery store employee that if they let their phone go to sleep while it's on the signature screen (of the supplier's delivery app), it causes their phone to crash. From the exasperation in his voice, I take it that this is a new "feature."

This might be a post about slop code, but who can say for sure?

A database of thousands of US #ICE agents leaked and got posted on @ddosecrets. Bluesky is blocking the link:
wired.com/story/bluesky-blocks

> Bluesky tells WIRED it blocked links to a leaked archive of information on 41,000 ICE, CBP, and other DHS workers because it contains people’s contact information, shared without their authorization.

#Bluesky is VC-funded, biggest investor: Blockchain Capital.

Remember this excuse next time there is a leak affecting people who happen not to be fascists.

Many Colorado courts have stopped livestreaming their proceedings, even though it’s required by state law, in response to abuse by fewer than 1% of users.

Reducing transparency isn’t the answer. Address the misuse, but don’t punish the public.

Politicians demand we trust them with warrantless spying under Section 702 of FISA, yet won’t follow the law on declassifying court opinions that point out abuse.

Congress must demand major reforms and block renewal of 702 until the opinion is public.

I wrote a new article! This one uses Yeats as a framing device, which also allowed me to use the line "The best are exhausted and isolated, while the worst are creating yet another vibe-coded pile of crap."

From now on I am going to assume that any FOSS project or tech influencer using, accepting or pushing LLM slop is on the take from the LLM companies. Because the fact is, either you are are taking money to do the bidding of the oligarchs, which means you are a sell-out POS, or you are doing the bidding of the oligarchs for free, which means you're an idiot who is leaving piles of money on the table. Either way, not a good look.

When the majority of the population is to stupid or lazy to avoid AI, how can truth survive?

More advice requested:
I need to practice for my viva. Uni have suggested feeding my thesis into copilot and getting it to test me by throwing out questions. Obviously the very thought of that makes me want to vomit. 🤢

Are there lists of common viva questions for specific areas? (Yes I have searched but they’re too general) Have you practiced for a viva without using the dreaded machinery?

slop, AI, just say no kids

⚖️🇺🇸 Yesterday, we filed a total of 5 complaints in 4 different countries against 1 single company – the US-based company #Scale – which operates the #AI training platform #Outlier.

🚨 #ScaleAI doesn't just farm their 900,000 workers' extensive knowledge and experience. The company also collects huge amounts of their personal data and forces them to go through invasive biometric verification to earn money.

Note that this attack on Minnesota’s elections was explicitly racist: these bozos dressed in what they thought were Muslim costumes. You might not think that’s a key part of testing an electoral system — but •they• did.

It’s not that they think that people in general are voting who shouldn’t be allowed to vote. It’s that they think that •brown people• are voting who shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

Be sure you savor and re-savor this •incredible• right-wing self-own:

Two “Project Veritas” operatives committed fraud at a Minnesota polling place to prove they wouldn’t get caught

••• and they got caught •••

and both are facing multiple felony charges.

It’s 1986 and my mother is shouting at me to stop touching the computer, I’m wasting my life.

It’s 2016 and I am fixing mother’s computer, regaling her about the variety of rich opportunities computer touching has given me in my life.

It’s 2026 and I am cursing my mother for ever letting me touch a computer. I have wasted my life.
