I didn't expect so many answers to literally sound like people trying to talk away an addiction problem. This is grim.

Often when I am talking with a tech worker, they will say something like, well, look, no one will die from my work. But was that ever true? Is it true now? https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/we-cannot-under-any-circumstances (My doctor clients know better.)

The elections ads are not reminding people quite enough that Donald J. Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of business fraud, and his sentence was literally *nothing*. And that ICE is arresting people off the streets, often injuring or killing them, whose crimes are literally *nothing*, yet are kept imprisoned anyway.

Been prepping for teaching an undergraduate lab on pond water, and so I've been spending lots of time looking through #microscopes.

@patigallardo.bsky.social we are really getting pushed to use it, but the explanations and suggestions are weird. Like we have a set number of times we are supposed to try to use AI in a day in order to save time. There is no indication of a rationale for that number. At this point it feels like desperation for companies that have invested in it.
