Whoa - that's a big call by Microsoft... but despite their 'success', they've never been all that smart. Here's hoping it seal them into the ignominious fate they so richly deserve.

Octavia Butler, mid-1990s:

"Imagine a future where food prices are high because of climate change and war, while grocery store shoppers are subjected to invasive surveillance."

Me, shopping in the mid-2020s and being told I have to wait for someone to unlock the toothpaste:

"Wait a minute."

I didn't expect so many answers to literally sound like people trying to talk away an addiction problem. This is grim.

Often when I am talking with a tech worker, they will say something like, well, look, no one will die from my work. But was that ever true? Is it true now? bloodinthemachine.com/p/we-can (My doctor clients know better.)

“Can the president then offer on eBay to sell them, all of our national security secrets to the highest bidder?”

This question was posed during our Presidential Records Act appeal hearing. DOJ's answer? Yes.

Been prepping for teaching an undergraduate lab on pond water, and so I've been spending lots of time looking through #microscopes.

I see lots of #microorganisms that swim around in tiny circles, like the #Gymnodinium at the start of this video.

#ScienceQuestions :
* Are there other organisms that move in the same way?
* Why do organisms do this?

@patigallardo.bsky.social we are really getting pushed to use it, but the explanations and suggestions are weird. Like we have a set number of times we are supposed to try to use AI in a day in order to save time. There is no indication of a rationale for that number. At this point it feels like desperation for companies that have invested in it.

i'll do another proper announcement post later around primetime but the no AI notice with cute fox is up on itch now: eniko.itch.io/cute-fox-no-ai-n

Why does everything in this space come across as so damn sleazy?

automating tasks displaces anger and aggression && prevents the real issues from ever reaching those who can address them ( from a French text on automation of public services shs.hal.science/file/index/doc )

automating tasks makes auditing the final result take longer & the human auditors lack the mental context and the intuitive understanding of trade-offs made & mistakes can cascade and degrade the entire ecosystem & incentive is strong not to see this: freakonometrics.hypotheses.org

I also picked 2024 as the year AI would have gone bust because that was one year after “pilot programs” started in mega corpos. You’d think one year of showing shit-all for ROI would have ended the experiment, but nooo

So:

- Leftist Lula wins in Brazil 🇧🇷
- Progressive student movement wins in Serbia 🇷🇸

Come on USA, I know you can kick the orange douche bag to the curb! 🇺🇸

#Eleicoes2026 : #Lula victory speech:

"We had to overcome foreign interference through #digitalplatforms, which we will have to regulate.

We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions & billions, paying no taxes to this country & trying to steer this country's election results."

I understand the point of this [formerly serious newspaper that has devolved into fluff] profile of #MarissaMayer (former CEO of Yahoo!) may be rage bait, so I am not including a link to it.

But ouf, reading these words (which have been widely circulating online) has been painful, especially as a mom.

You can't think of 3 qualities that make your child special, so you ask an AI Assistant? NO, NO, NO, NO. UNACCEPTABLE.

I imagine Marielle reading this and my heart breaks for her.
