When Anthropic warns that models are "months away" from "self-replication" on internet-connected appliances, this translates to one or more of the following:
- Those in IT who have always firmly believed that the correct number of "smart" appliances to own is zero, have been correct
- "Frontier" AI companies are literally selling malware as a product. You know, the kind of toxic waste that 20 years ago had an entire array of companies selling you products to defend against and prevent?
- Anthropic are lying out their ass as usual and this is their latest incarnation of "this tech is dangerous!" and "just N more months, bro"
I guess one question is whether there's a statute that grants commercial delivery robots access to public sidewalks, and that requires pedestrians to give way to them? Unless the state legislature municipality passes a law or code establishing these things, it seems crazy to me that police should be empowered to order a human being off the sidewalk. Then again, this wouldn't be the first time that "disorderly conduct" ended up being abused.
Zelenskyy with the receipts:
Quote from Zelenskyy: "To understand whether these are really technical problems at SpaceX, or whether it is some kind of operation or agreement to restrict us, to disconnect us, to prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people... we sent a couple of cars with Starlink to the territory of European Union countries, and they drove at speeds of over 180 km/h where permitted. Starlink works. We have the corresponding records and the corresponding evidence."

There's a dust-up over an AI ad from Bookshop.org. But they didn't use AI; Meta's ad platform automatically created an AI "variation" of the original, non-AI content.
I went to disable this crap in our Shiraki Press ad account, and got served a popup *demanding a reason why*.
Fuck Meta for this. Consent matters. We've just pulled all paid advertising from their platforms.
Trifecta: Meta screwed with the accounts of the non-fascist Brazilian presidential candidate: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/meta-employees-said-lulas-accounts-were-hindered-during-brazil-election-folha-2026-10-16/
The American tech oligarchs are completely beyond control at this point. They need to be stepped on, hard and soon.
Meanwhile, Larry Ellison and his pals have locked out of TikTok the account promoting the new, scathing documentary about Elon Musk.
Big (Tech) Media is on a censorship rampage aimed to shut down the critics of the escalating right-wing extremism.
Let's hope this is (yeah right) an innocent mistake that will be quickly fixed. But if Meta has banned the No Kings account from Instagram, as alleged, it is a direct and vile act of censorship. Of course, it'll please the endlessly hypocritical Trumpers. https://x.com/HQNewsNow/status/2111534415369437300?s=20

"when our labor is stolen that’s a personal betrayal"
I don't understand how more people don't see this. They're strip-mining the internet and selling it back to you via taps that they control. It's crazy to me that people are so quick to willingly surrender to what is clearly a new form of mass oppression that's taking root.Brazilian Amazon deforestation falls to lowest on record as pivotal vote looms - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/oct/16/brazil-amazon-deforestation-lowest-on-record-election fab achievement, but I fear it won't save lula...

@luca Yeah. It's fast fashion https://tante.cc/2026/01/15/software-as-fast-fashion/
The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.
People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).
Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.
The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.
Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).
As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.
(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)
The amount of financial anxiety I can suddenly detect permeating the people I know in the AI sector gives me the strength to go on
I have avoided commenting on speculating on when we're nearing Peak Bubble for the past two years, and I still probably wouldn't do it in the press, but by pure social intuition (of the sort no one should use to guide their investments), I think we're hitting it around June 2027
Shoot the reckoning straight into my veins, I'm so ready
