RE: ec.social-network.europa.eu/@E

"AI" companies are companies such as OpenAI or Anthropic. These are billion dollar companies. Training LLMs requires *massive* amounts of resources that regular people or small companies who aren't already funded with billions of dollars, simply don't have.

It's not that Mom and Pop can start a company, make a business out of training "AI", and make a living being their own bosses.

Allowing anyone to train "AI" on copyright-protected content benefits *only* the billion-dollar companies and cements the stranglehold on power they already have. It benefits nobody else.

If I purchase a paperback book, I may post a photograph of one page or so for a book review. That is considered fair use. If I upload photographs of all pages and thus reproduce the book in its entirety, I'll quickly hear from lawyers. What is different when "AI" companies integrate the copyrighted book in its entirety into its corpus and the reproduce it?

Today's "AI" companies should be abolished. Certainly not allowed to train on copyrighted material, which benefits only them. And they'll pull up the ladder behind them. I distinguish between "AI" companies and AI companies. Anyone can train a Convolutional Neural Network and then run it on $100 hardware for object detection to activate the cat food dispenser when the camera sees the cat enters the room, or detect when the delivery guy delivered a package at the front door and send a notification to Home Assistant if you're not at home. Nobody except Big Tech can train a LLM.

It turns out #NOAI is a winning promise for indie developers and artists looking to offer counterprogramming to big tech and Hollywood crap on a sandwich.

Those questions though.

So many feel like "Is it important to you as a creator of copyright works that AI companies are facing competition between themselves to use your work without your knowledge or consent. Why do you hate the AI companies?"

Written by lawyers, for lawyers.

Under what conditions should copyright-protected content be used for AI training?

🗣️We know this is a topic many of you feel strongly about.

We want to hear your views on issues related to the use of copyright-protected content for training AI models, for research, and more.

SE Gyges made his long Bluesky thread "AI safety is mostly a sex cult" into an insanely long substack post, then hastily deleted. Fortunately*, it was multiply captured.

archive.ph/3B8Bo
original thread: skywriter.blue/@segyges.bsky.s

so it's probably important to know this stuff. but it's important to remember that Gyges is a rationalist who insists he isn't a rationalist, a solid AI doomsday believer who tried for the longest time to hide his power level, and someone who *seriously believes* that you can say slurs against a computer (he compiled the blocklists "AI slur user" and "AI hater" on bluesky).

it's nice to see someone listing all this stuff but also these are the grains of salt you have to take this writeup with.

anyway, TESCREAL is a cult and Gyges seems to be under the impression he's out of the cult in any meaningful way.

Google is under fire for clearing over 300 hectares

Despite the assessments still being in progress, the tech giant’s contractors started clearing trees in the area months ago, raising the alarm bells at the Finnish Nature Conservation Association.

Brazil's presidential election is on a knife-edge.

Right-winger Flávio Bolsonaro has powerful interests on his side but is also counting on the Trump administration's help to push him over the line. jacobin.com/2026/10/brazil-bol

To those asking why they don’t unplug Christa Pike… healthcare workers have a duty to do no harm.

They can’t kill their patient on behalf of the state (this is a good thing!).

Being against capital punishment doesn’t mean you aren’t appalled by what Pike did.

It means you don’t believe the State should be executioner.

It means you don’t support torture.

People have lost their lives.

They’ve been arrested for miscarriages. They’ve bled to death in parking lots.

There was nothing courageous about overturning Roe.

Sam Alito stripped us of our rights and wants us to feel bad he lost friends?

We teach young girls to cover their drinks. Walk with their keys between their knuckles. Dress modestly. Have a buddy system. Yell “fire”.

By the time we’re adults we have a novel length list of rules to follow to avoid being raped.

Many of us are raped anyways.

That’s why we’re enraged.

EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU’RE REGISTERED, check to make sure. Trumpists are purging the rolls.

I help maintain two separate projects for looking for LLM-generated code in open-source repositories.

slopcheck is a CLI tool I created for checking repositories for signs of slop in git histories. It also shows the last commit with no signs.

codeberg.org/liberty/slopcheck

slopscore does the same thing, but it also provides a Web interface and is more comprehensive at the moment.

codeberg.org/polyphony/slopsco

Both projects are maintained by teams of awesome developers. Check them out!
