There was this consensus of not going to X after Elon Musk turned it into a right-wing hellhole but I see more and more especially journalists going back "because the AI people are there".

Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.

The legal environment for abusive men is shifting;

a women whose defensive of stabbing her husband while he slept was that she lost control after years of abuse, has had her conviction for murder quashed, leaving the prosecution two weeks to decide if want to try for a retrial (presumably on a charge of manslaughter?).

The notion of some form of asynchronous self-defence against domestic abuse seems to be an emerging norm?

Even if someone else is not following ethical standards, you should still hold yourself to a higher ethical standard. The reason this matters is that this makes these people more visible to not only border cops, but also racist civilians in the public who seek to harm them, especially children. Migrant children in the US are at high risk of trafficking. Do not encourage the behavior of publicizing their faces.

You should still draw attention to their plights and boost orgs that seek to help them, but especially children, cannot consent to their photos being shared, even if they weren't migrants.

The pro-crypto legislation didn't pass after all, and some of the credit for this surely must go to Molly White. She is without question doing the best, most relentless coverage of that irredeemably slimy and corrupt industry -- joined at the hip with the irredeemably corrupt Trump world. And there's ample evidence that her work informs the debate in a significant way.

Co-op Cloud is a really unique project that blurs some of the lines around what open source is. It's both a toolset and a federation, software and community, that can't really be disentangled. It is an exercise in community management, in software as a commons shared within a social (real) community, that's fascinating and inspiring.

I'd definitely recommend folks check it out, especially those interested in self-hosting for their community or activist circles.

That they are winding down the "Forkiverse" is fine. Nothing has to last forever. But with the hosts all admitting that they mostly just rented a Mastodon instance they then didn't moderate and use I wonder how it could be labelled an "experiment". What was the hypothesis?

And when I heard Kevin Roose just saying "yeah there's thousands of accounts but since nobody built a business there we can just pull the plug without a second thought" it because clear that - at least for Mr Sloplord - it never was about creating a social space but about creating a mall.
