There's a new very lightweight Fediverse platform that's just been released called littleFedi. You can follow its new official account at:

🌱 @littlefedi_official

Its official website including download and source code is at:

🌱 littlefedi.org

LittleFedi is intended for techy people who want to create their own Fediverse server using as few resources as possible.

It's written by @stefano (who also created the weather service FediMeteo).

Politics _and_ religion

You can't protect press freedom by violating the First Amendment.

This ruling is deeply troubling. It fails to confront the fundamental First Amendment problems posed by the so-called “independent” editorial board.

Press freedom can't be imposed by government decree.

Journalists witnessed yesterday's botched execution in Tennessee and did their job by telling the public about it.

But Tennessee is fighting to stop the press from witnessing every stage of an execution, in a lawsuit brought by the AP. Nothing to hide, right?

Erase social media tomorrow? Brits say yes - theregister.com/offbeat/2026/1 "Just 7 percent of Brits think social media is a force for good and around one in three suspect that life would get better if all these sites were erased from the internet tomorrow. "

The AI Pascal’s Wager

Should you accept contributions generated by LLMs in your Open Source project?

ploum.net/2026-10-01-pascal_wa

This is very bad news. Owncast has relied on this program the past couple of years, and has allowed us to have servers and services we wouldn't normally afford to be able to do otherwise, especially now with Gabe being unemployed.

Any other cloud hosting providers want to step in and help all the open source projects that are going to be in this position?

Additionally, this might be a good time to show your financial support for Owncast.

> On the other hand, if you refuse AI-generated contributions to your project right now, the worst very hypothetical regret you could ever have is "I should probably have done it sooner".

“I'm truly just blown away by how little impact AI has had in our field, even when it comes to pure diagnostics.

My hospital employs a limited number of "models" for basic tasks like pulmonary nodule detection, and even then they suck to such a point that I stopped using them early on in my residency.

Beyond that, I have never heard of anything remotely approaching the point of analyzing CT, MR, US, PET, or catheter angiography accurately and producing a complete report.

The technology is not just in "early stages"...it's plainly nonexistent. And the "cutting edge" research that I review ain't exactly making much progress (it's usually for much more banal bullshit, like fixing reporting errors, and triaging critical findings...which is all well and good, but only modestly impactful in the setting of a true clinical workflow).”
