To the „we are running small(er) local model“ folks: All relevant open-weight models are based (in more than one way) on continuous work from the mega GenAI corps. As soon as those „local small models“ will threaten their market or power they will stop publishing open-weight models. Because, why shouldn’t they? We know that the people who own and control GenAI tech are the worst. Open-weight is nothing but a fig leaf, ready to be discarded when no longer useful. Same goes for the Chinese ones.

Here's a really basic history lesson:

#Aotearoa #NewZealand is the only British colony where the indigenous people, Māori, declared sovereignty over the land.

He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, is the 1835 Declaration of Independence of New Zealand. This is a foundational document by which northern Māori chiefs asserted their collective sovereign authority and independence as a nation.

James Busby assisted in having this Declaration immediately sent to the colonial office in Britain where it was finally received by King William VI who recognised #Māori authority by registering the first flag of Nu Tireni - Te Kara. By July 1839, another 18 rangatira (chiefs) from around Aotearoa had put their mark to the parchment.

When the founding document of NZ #TeTiritioWaitangi was signed by most not all Māori rangatira (Chiefs) 1840 it was an agreement between 2 sovereigns - Māori and the British Crown for co-existence in partnership.

Māori never ceded their sovereignty but remained powerless against the colonial govt that never honored the founding document.

Today, the Treaty of Waitangi still protects #Aotearoa #NewZealand from foreign exploitation of much of NZ's resources which is why these hard right #NZPol agents of groups such as #AtlasNetwork are determined to dismantle the treaty for foreign exploitation.

I wish I could offer more advice and guidance on living without AI-tainted or anti-humanist/fascist software. I think if you're worried about it, and have energy and time, you should try keeping your existing software and hardware going for as long as it is feasible. If updates stop coming, consider moving things to be offline-only. Research repairable alternatives. Learn about emulation. Choose safer options, and you probably will find No-AI list as helpful as I did:

Finally, if you want my opinion on Linux: I'm sorry but I think it's mostly done for, for my purposes. I don't think I'll find it fully ethical to use after LTS support for the late 5.x/early 6.x kernel drops. And don't get me started on systemd, python and other things that embrace AI.
