Democratic Tech Fund is hosting a Community call, in preparation for the launch of their funding platform (hopefully by the end of October 🎃).

Once the platform is deployed, coop cloud deployments for local communities will be able to campaign for funding from the DTF!

URGENT!!! In a week and a half I am going to be out on the streets and homeless. I am going to be forced to live off of my savings very very soon. I wasn't able to secure a car so I'm going to have to be out on the streets and life is going to be significantly more difficult before I can find a job and a place to live. I'm also going to need to move my belongings out of a storage unit my family owns and figure out how I'm going to afford that...

@davidgerard @dysfun It's baffling to me how community projects, that by definition require collaboration and building on each other's work, can accept these sorts of isolating, fragmenting, deskilling technologies. Like even if their output was good (which it's not really) all you get is a whole bunch of slop libraries that will never be consolidated into something meaningful

That's not what he's alleging. To anyone who's been paying attention, that's self-evident. What's he is alleging, is that they've done it on utterly scurrilous ways, lying through their teeth to the public throughout.

I thought it would be simple to test the new USB-based SD card reader I bought, but it ended up being a multifactorial nightmare.

So far I've learned:

- My Thinkpad T520 has flaky USB ports.
- A bunch of my old SD and MicroSD cards are corrupted.
- I have exactly one MicroSD card that works at all in both the new and old readers.

And then some mysteries:

- Using the new reader, after unmounting the card, it remounts spontaneously. I have to just yank it.
- Using an SD adapter, the working MicroSD card mounts read-only in the old reader, and isn't recognized at all in the new reader.

So, does the new reader work? Who fucking knows!

@pinchartl@floss.social Since learning that the kernel is adopting AI, I am planning to switch to one of the BSDs that has adopted a strong anti-AI stance.

I'm just a linux user and developer of a project that fits LPC decently well, but is squarely in userspace, but yeah, not really interested in that anymore

@pinchartl I'm not a kernel developer, only a userspace developer. But if there's one thing I've learned over the past decades, it's that no FOSS project, no matter how big or important it seems, is eternal, and the only thing that ensures its existence is its community. Not its devs, not its users, but its community.

A move such as forcibly embracing AI despite the opinion of the community is the worst thing a project can make. People will not accept this. As far as Linux goes, they are already looking for alternative solutions.

Linux will lose significant support over this. It probably will not feel it harshly yet, but it will be weakened, its community fractured, less vibrant, and, face it, less competent. When, one day in the future, Linux dies, historians will point to this decision as the start of the decline.

I am sad.
