@davidgerard this is where a lot of people in tech are right now and the cognitive dissonance is incredible

“oh I’d never do slop because I” type lgtm in all the PRs, type the code myself on the chatbot’s instructions, only use it for tests, only use it for docs, blah blah blah

and meanwhile the project is broken in ridiculous ways and they haven’t noticed because the slopbot says it’s fine and they’ve cognitively offloaded all validation to the LLM. I haven’t met anyone who uses the slopbot and doesn’t cognitively offload to it; all of them do the glass-eyed “here’s what claude said” more and more til that’s the only thing making decisions and driving conversations in the project.

@JennyFluff @davidgerard

"hey, claude you must guarantee you don't make the code worse when refactoring"

I find this absolutely mind boggling. If you know how an LLM works, it's obviously nonsense, sure.

But if you buy into the marketing that ascribes intelligence to these machines: what does that even mean? How are you defining 'worse'? And why would you need to explicitly state that? And these are people who, apparently, have experience using formal language to instruct machines built around systems of logic!.

@davidgerard ohno, this made me look into a slop project similar to my non-slop floppy recovery software and the last commit was "hey, claude you must guarantee you don't make the code worse when refactoring"

I am just..
How can you seriously use this as a professional.

@davidgerard like no, you aren’t carefully reading thousands and thousands of lines of LLM output to make sure they’re not slop.

yes, the parts of the codebase you’re offloading to the LLM are important, and allowing any part of your project to be slop makes the whole thing slop because of how LLMs work in practice.

no, I don’t particularly want “your buddy claude” (all of these guys use this exact non-joke for some reason) to be part of the discourse. I don’t think lazily consulting the slopbot adds anything positive. I keep watching negative outcomes happen unacknowledged when you consult it. the codebase is now a disjoint mass of a hundred broken abstractions and non-abstractions because that’s what “your buddy claude” recommends.

big push to try to push "responsible" AI coding as "not *slop*"

just hit another one

"oh no they're very anti-slop here's their CONTRIBUTING.md"

list of ways to use the slop bot in their project

come off it with this bullshit

One of my favorite student proofs was written by a student who was just learning to speak English. He'd get frustrated with long explanations and just switch to equations or diagrams and write "it is like this:"

Then demonstrate his point.

He could have run the final draft through and LLM and it would add some pointless sentences to pad out the proof so it was less terse and more like every other proof ever written.

It would have been worse.

@miss_rodent yes, to be clear I am extremely angry at the social construction of the “support agent” role in this case, not at all angry at the actual human being whose interactions with me are mediated by 10 layers of baffling and dysfunctional automations

We’ve edited together footage from DEATHRO’s 2025 Aotearoa tour and designed a Neocities site to host the tour diary! The site works best on a computer (depending on which browser you use) but is okay on a phone. You can also watch the videos on Internet Archive 🖤

it’s really weird to see people post about Apple not betting on AI as Apple rushes the release of the ear cameras that can only feed photos into an LLM, right after Apple started a fight with the EU over the API they designed that lets an LLM access all the data on your device

Switching from Flock to another ALPR provider or other police surveillance technology isn't a fix, EFF’s Matthew Guariglia told @NPR. "You're just replacing one color of camera for another. Those dangers you were concerned about are still going to be there." npr.org/2026/08/22/nx-s1-59314

This is pretty much where I sit on AI today. Christopher Newfield always gets the context right IMO. utotherescue.blogspot.com/2026

- Research and science has been dismantled or pushed abroad. This is going to tank innovation
- Education is increasingly outsourced to LLMs/ed tech as well

What's going to be left?

It's not entirely clear what the future US economy is supposed to be doing other than buy stuff with debt

In the late 90s/early 2000s the US deindustrialised by outsourcing manufacturing

The bargain was basically "you make the stuff, we provide design, research, services, software, and financial markets"

Now they seem to be "de-servicing" as well:

- US films and TV are being shot abroad
- Software dev and related are being outsourced to LLMs and the shift from US models to cheaper non-US ones seems certain
- Finance is all-in on "AI" while tariffs and trade wars destroy its fundamentals
