Kind of shocking whenever I check up on the blog of somebody I used to respect who now earnestly seems to believe AGI is here.

Feels like it’s happening more and more these days.

@eff LLMs are certainly even-handed and equitable doing cognitive and environmental damage, and they'll violate the copyright of anyone regardless of their being rich or poor.

Let's not start looking at access to these vampiric systems as being a human right. They're no more necessary than cigarettes or non-fungible tokens.

One rhetorical trick AI vendors & boosters use to steamroll over concerns - like the lack of demonstrable ROI - is to paint the LLM future as "inevitable".

It doesn't matter that the end product is worse, or that productivity gains are elusive.

Go all-in or "get left behind". It is *inevitable*

In reality, what's *inevitable* is that this technology will have to become profitable in the not-too-distant future.

The CFO has entered the chat, and we have no good answers for them.

paper and a pen, and I'd taken my small whiteboard with me, and I guided them through drawing a little mushroom house.

When I gave the paper and pen out, everyone was groaning and mumbling about 'not being an artist' and expressing general daunted sentiments about the impending task of requiring to draw something.

While I guided them through the drawing, everyone was giggling, and oohing and ahhing.

In a few scant minutes everyone had drawn a cute mushroom house with some bugs and flowers -

I did it. It's a blog post.

Ideally, publishers—like librarians—should see themselves as guardians of the culture, but, well . . . 🤷

Ready for a legal breakdown of the literary agent model?

Me: Why make all those people angry?
Also me: But this is what I'm thinking about.

Along the way, I’ll offer a personal publishing horror story and advice to writers considering traditional publishing.

So here goes. (Warning: I think the rebel in me is coming out.)

"If they gave us the money they spent on" Wow! That one starting phrase could be reused by Ted for a lot of comics. (wars, tax cuts, corporate welfare, ...)

When prices reflect 100%+ of the real costs, bottom lines aren't moving, and teams are delivering worse software later in return for massive spends, I suspect we'll see what's really "inevitable"

Do you know a good hosting service that hasn't gone all AI-bananas, offers hosting packages for multiple websites, and has server locations based in Europe?

just got a reminder that if i had no scruples i could be very successful

One of the simplest way of dealing with AI in your business-sector, especially from the AI-boosters within your company, is to ask, "Will our insurance companies cover the costs of any errors? If not, then it's not production-ready. Yet!"

That way it's an external organisation that you have to ask, and companies are required to hedge their bets by having insurance.

And it will act as a face-saving way of people within the company to climb down from the AI-boosterism.

"We're always running experiments with new technologies to see if they will be viable for our customers..."

It's the face-saving way of saying that the Emperor is wearing no clothes... :D

I think there will be real value in vibe code cleanup services but I expect most jobs would be a discovery that the vibe coding is a symptom, not a cause.

The dramatic increase in AI data centers in such a short period of time, facilitated by governments at all levels, proves that there is will for “progress”, but somehow that will is never available for anything other than making a handful of people rich.

I want to see this kind of push for infrastructure that tackles climate change and reduces suffering.

Hey folks, can you help me out with a little something: trying to come up with a good number of files limit for a file scan (for Kitten so you don’t hit heap memory limits if you run it from the wrong directory by mistake) and I’d love some statistics from real JavaScript/TypeScript Node.js projects of the number of files in them (excluding .git and node_modules).

Would you be kind enough to run the following command in Terminal in your largest projects and let me know what number your get (along with a short description of the project):

find . \( -name "node_modules" -o -name ".git" \) -prune -o -print | wc -l

Thank you :)
