We'll be gathering at the @dweb camp in Alte Holle/Berlin from 8-12 July, together with people working on the crossroads of #opensource #decentralisation #cooperative #SSE Social and Solidarity Economy and #commoning

I'm really happy that we decided collectively to do this, when we were together at the @internetarchiveeurope in Amsterdam last February.

We'll be working together shaping the building up of the Democratic Tech Fund Below a list of the workshops and sessions we're part of (directly), while weaving connections with all people and communities working in solidarity towards a decent world, based on shared, democratic tech that works for our communities and not against us.

Boosted already but this is just to say that "coders" at the same time complaining that "delete everything" in a comment can hobble an agent and is tantamount to criminal, and insisting that these things are Artificial Super Intelligence is exactly what Orwell was describing with Doublethinking: holding two absolutely opposite concepts in the mind at the same time and juggling one and the other ad hoc without ever considering that they're incompatible.

“Responsible use” of LLMs isn’t a thing! On the next Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 live stream, sava saheli singh joins @alex and me to discuss the problems with AI “harm reduction” frameworks in edtech.

Maybe we really need to transcend "Open Source" and move towards more of a "community software" or "humane software" kind of direction that puts the focus on Freedom (similar to how Open Source works) but also on responsibility and care for each other and the infrastructures these systems establish.

The "AI" reactions really show how heterogenous the "Open Source" field and the people's and organizations' values are.

Grindr has been caught sharing users' HIV status and precise location with advertisers without obtaining valid consent. They must immediately stop prioritizing profits over users’ safety, and make privacy the default across its platform. eff.org/deeplinks/2026/06/grin

This July 4th weekend, America celebrates “freedom” while nearly half a million people sit in jail awaiting trial, many because they cannot afford bail.

That is not liberty, Jeremy Cherson writes; that is poverty punished as policy.

Hey DIY punks, if you are concerned about the future of #Bandcamp, one route to having an autonomous way to share your music online is by building your own band website with #Faircamp.

See our recent how-to:

Also a nice interview with the creator if Faircamp just appeared in @diyconspiracy :

Version 2.0 of Faircamp is coming soon, which should be even easier to use!

> The future feels bleak for educators. Rich curriculums we craft intentionally and carefully for real human audiences are now routinely stolen and regurgitated by predictive algorithms

Feeling this too, on a personal level, as work related to web dev becomes a smaller and smaller part of my daily life

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy they claim there’s “exorbitant levels of sick leave in companies following the pandemic”

The pandemic isn’t over.

The pandemic isn’t being mitigated.

The sick leave is because we’re in a mass disabling event that most people are choosing to ignore.

It will only get worse.

Germans must now have doctor’s note to call in sick to work: ‘Extraordinarily high levels of sick leave’

It’s Disability Pride Month and I’m mourning one of our elders…. Alice Wong.

Every year on July 1st she would talk about disabled rage.

She would remind us that it’s ok to be angry at the eugenicist, capitalist, patriarchal system we’re trapped in.

She would encourage us to embrace our disabilities AND our anger.

She would give us permission to be our true selves… to refuse to hide for the comfort of others.

She passed away last November but left an indelible mark on our community.

I want to honour her this month by continuing the tradition she started and inviting all my disabled peers to be proud, unapologetically themselves and angry if that’s what they feel.

Don’t hide.

Don’t smile and say “I’m fine” when you’re in pain.

Don’t settle for being treated as “less than”.

Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

Looks like Grid (mygrid.app/) is a pretty good candidate for a privacy-respecting location sharing app.

Claims E2E-encryption, open source, minimal data collection (passkeys rather than email signin, own tileset rather than Google), de-Googled-compatible. Has a reasonable free tier.

There are also some other "soft" signs of trustworthiness: Donation page, communicative devs.

The encryption is via Matrix. (They let you specify your own homeserver, which sounds neat?) I'm pretty fed up with Matrix from both self-hosting and user perspectives, there are problems with the protocol and how it is managed, etc... but *how* Grid uses Matrix is probably more important than any of that. Might look into the details.

I'm not set up for an audit of a phone app but at a glance this does look more promising than others!

Oh my. The two 'Slack' instances I use through gritted teeth due to historical bad decisions made by groups in which I want to participate (and, I hope, help migrate to technologies compatible with their values) have just got even more 🤮 with the unwanted appearance of a new 'Slackbot' ('AI' thing that no one needs). The enshittification proceeds unabated.

Bonfire Social 1.0.5 is out! 🔥

Archipelago mode means instead of open federation (connect to everyone, then play whack-a-mole blocking bad actors), you can now choose to federate *only* with a hand-picked allow-list of trusted people or servers. Communities can link up into an "archipelago" of like-minded "islands" with shared rules, ideal for tight-knit groups, neighbourhoods, assemblies, co-ops, or orgs that want to connect with each other but not necessarily the whole internet.

We also added new admin throughput controls as our latest take on "calm empowerment": simple defaults first, curated overrides next, and full advanced control behind an explicit gesture. In practice, you can keep a busy instance responsive by picking a speed preset, prioritising certain kinds of activity, or fine-tuning each background task queue, no config files or restarts needed.

Also new in 1.0.5:

Faster search, now powered by Sonic
Broadcast announcements to everyone on your instance
Embeddable widgets: put your pinned posts on any website
PGP-encrypted system emails
Plus lots of improvements and fixes (federation, polls, media, accessibility, mobile)
