The Revolutionary Origins of Memorial Day

A reminder that the 'apolitical' veneer of Memorial Day is a deliberate whitewashing of its original meaning. Something to talk about around the grill this weekend.

On May 30, 1937, Chicago police opened fire on striking steelworkers and their families near Republic Steel. Ten workers were killed. The first media story? That “rioting” workers had provoked the cops.

Indigenous Grand Canyon National Monument Designation Wins in Appeals Court

Arizona Republican-led lawsuit challenging Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni monument unanimously dismissed.

Signs you have carpenter ants

2. city sends a very tiny permit to affix to baseboard
3. try to move a book and are told “keep this entrance clear, ma’am” because of the “cement delivery coming later”
4. Your dish rack is dismantled “because it’ll be cheaper to rebuild from scratch”
5. no room on the dresser due to like 85 tiny pickups illegally parked there

Hey everybody! It's time for manchicken's quest.

**Today's quest**: Find a question or code contribution on your favorite open source project. Do a little research and answer the question, or review the code contribution. Just one, it doesn't have to be more (but bonus points will absolutely be awarded).

**Why this quest?**: Right now open source maintainers are catching a lot of shit. Either it's slop-mongers throwing bogus bugs their way, or it's dipshits trying to breach their projects to steal money from others. It's hard enough to be a maintainer even without this shit. This quest will make you help someone who could really benefit from just a little bit more community participation.

Just one. Report back to collect your points.

If you are annoyed by people bragging about the number of lines of code their favorite LLM can spit out per day, you might enjoy this story about Bill Atkinson, who once when asked how many lines of code he had written that week responded with -2000.

Dr Margaret Connolly, part of the Irish delegation onboard the flotilla and sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, speaks about her experience of abduction and illegal imprisonment by the zionist regime.

It looks a lot like Trump’s #SlushFund is actually an attempt to raise a private presidential militia of jackbooted thugs. Considering our #democracy is at stake, at risk of a fascist takeover, we cannot let this happen.

I finally started reading The AI Con by @emilymbender and @alex and I already laughed out loud in the first few pages. "Racist pile of linear algebra" is my new favourite term for genAI.

Would you look at that! Samsung is now publicly acknowledging that they abuse their market power as a supplier of electronics to surveil user behavior, including content viewed regardless of whether or not one of their services delivered the content.

They’re using automated content recognition to detect what you watch on your own tv, and they exfiltrate your personal data to sell.

That’s some real threat actor behavior right there.

Huh. This is interesting (shows where the IRD (our tax department) hosts our data): hosting-checker.net/websites/i how's that data sovereignty working out for us, Aotearoa NZ?

This kind of bullshit is just ONE reason why I staunchly oppose this technology and any others used to create widespread surveillance dragnets.

It’s long past time to deflock our communities.
