Hey @inthesetimes How about adding the Mastodon link to your homepage. Nobody wants to go to Meta or X.

AI regulation is already happening at the state level—from Colorado’s protections against algorithmic discrimination to California’s transparency rules for frontier AI models.

A Trump executive order could put those laws in jeopardy.

Prosfygika Resist

The Greek state is planning the eviction of “Oi Prosfygika” in Athens, one of the largest self-organized housing communities in Europe. This space represents collective living, social projects, and resistance against displacement.

Since February 5, Aristotelis Chantzis has been on hunger strike. On May 1, Suzon Doppagne joined him. Both are protesting against the impending eviction and for the preservation of the community. But what exactly is Prosfygika?

There are thousands of people working in UK worker co-ops, collectively sitting on millions of pounds in separate bank accounts.

What would it look like to organise money collectively instead?

This month on Punchcard I spoke to Rob Callender from Kin.coop about savings clubs, collective finance, and why worker co-ops might need to think beyond just democratising work.

“Your savings account is holding us back.”

Replacing Banks with Savings Clubs — out now on Punchcard

I’ve had to move apartments and it’s been absolutely brutal on my baseline. The setback has been humbling, terrifying and frustrating in equal measure.

This is life with chronic illness.

Everything is so much harder.

Any significant upheaval can cause major losses of function.

To make matters worse I found mold in my closet and it appears most of my wardrobe got contaminated.

It’s just been one thing after another.

A friend is trying to salvage them, but with the severity of my MCAS I suspect I may have to toss and replace.

That said, hit me up with any tips you might have for removing mold and mildew from clothes. Or hidden gems for finding cheap but comfortable, ethical clothing. I can only wear loose cotton and my clothes were all good quality (and I hate shopping).

I plan to write a series of articles once I recover, including one about housing instability and another about setbacks and contingency planning when chronically ill.

Thank you to everyone who’s been supporting me and patiently waiting for me to get back to writing!

Trump may be on the verge of tying the United States to China irrevocably:

Trump and Xi Jinping are reportedly considering a deal to allow China to invest $1 trillion in the United States,
largely to build factories on American soil.

It would be an unforced error of world-historic proportions.

“I don’t blame China,”
Trump told business leaders in Beijing in 2017.

“After all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country for the benefit of its citizens?
I give China great credit.”

Campaigning in 2024, he said he would welcome the arrival of Chinese automakers,
a position he reiterated this past January in Detroit:
“If they want to come in and build the plant and hire you and hire your friends and your neighbors, that’s great.
I love that.
Let China come in.”

Indeed, he may even view such investment as a prize worthy of concessions.

A trillion-dollar infusion of capital would exceed the total direct investment in the United States made by any other country since the Declaration of Independence.

Even a fraction of that amount would blow apart what remains of our economic defenses,
weakening national security and supply-chain resilience,
handing the Chinese Communist Party a powerful tool with which to subvert our market,
undermining the basic logic of the president’s own trade agenda
and kneecapping our efforts at rebuilding domestic industry.

I had exactly the same problem.. until at a certain moment suddenly my browser crashed and all open tabs were forgotten. I was suddenly back at one tab. Oh noos, disaster! 😱

And you know what happened? Nothing happened. Those tabs were all backlog. Interesting. Must read, should process. But once they were lost it was a relief, a burden from the shoulders.

You might say that today with Social experience design I study the solution development process for solving wicked problems. SX is anchored on a simple life philosophy which is based on the assumption that "simple solutions still exist".

With my tab hoarding I didn't honor that assumption. Based on observation that everything we need to solve wicked problems is already available. All the wisdom, knowledge, common sense, and life experience. It is all available in abundance, lying in the street, as we trample on it on our hurried day-to-day.

The information isn't the problem. Being too swamped to process it is.

Looking to follow more people/accounts working on disability studies, disability history, crip theory, disability justice, DisCrit, etc

OpenReception is an open source medical practice booking system. It's employing a lot of good and forward facing tech to enhance security as well as
privacy (passkeys, PQC, Shamir Secret Sharing, etc.).

Sounds like it might be a good alternative to tech stressed medical practices in #Aotearoa NZ.

Unfortunately the link is in Geman. But the publisher often/mostly releases the same content in English a few hours later, then a clickable flag appears on the same page.

Interesting to you, @lightweight ?

Under a fascist regime everyone is a criminal, which is perhaps a truly hopeful and even aspirational thing.

We are all criminal, so not keeping others' secrets risks self-incrimination.

We are all criminal, so giving the authorities anything is never worth it.

We are all criminal, so we all hang together or be hanged together.

We are all criminal.
